Becoming A Special Education Teacher Essay

Growing up I have always found myself disinterested in school and could never seem to find my way. I grew up with a learning disability and always found myself struggling with my classes and barely getting by. I constantly found myself looking at the clock waiting for it to be 2:30, it seemed as if the day was never going to end. Nothing about school seemed exciting to me, I only had a handful of friends and felt like I was incompetent and incapable of accomplishing anything. It wasn’t until High School when I started to find myself and discover who I was. I started to break out of my shell and left the shy, “stupid” girl behind. I started making more friends and doing well in classes. During my senior year I felt the pressure of figuring out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I had not a clue what college I wanted to go to …show more content…
One of my most memorable experiences I’ve had as a teacher, was when I student taught as a preschool teacher in Burlington Vermont with inner city children. These children mostly came from low income families and also single family homes. The children in the class were all 3 or 4 years old. One of my first days in the class I saw two children fighting in the class, I walked over to the children to try to figure out what was going on, one of the children looked at me and started using vulgar language towards me. I knew right then and there, this class was not going to be an easy group. After working with this challenging group I learned that listening is key to being a successful teacher. These children just needed someone they could trust and someone that would listen to

I attended Jane Addams Elementary School for my field experience hours. As I was attending this school, I started to think about when I was a student teacher at my elementary school. My experiences with both schools were different because each school had a different setup for how they wanted to teach the class. My freshman and sophomore year of high school, I had volunteered to do student teaching at my elementary school, and it was really tough for me because that was my first time ever teaching students at a fifth-grade level.…

At the start of high school, my family was more separated than ever, and being that my dad is in the military it never got better. Thus, I was forced to do what every young man was supposed to do, man up and get thru the day, week, and year. I would cope with my unfortunate life at home by going to the library every day which caused me to excel in high school but had created a void in my life, making me into an anti-social kid who was naïve to the outside world. As I hit senior year of high school everything in my life seemed to fall apart and the only safe places I had were the gym and library at the time. I had no goal set in mind going their other than being there for myself looking back to those days.…

I have supported students in completing work independently as well as in a group. During this time, I utilized their reward chart visual as a constant motivator and reminder of what they were working towards. My high intuitiveness and calming nature were proven helpful in de-escalating individual students’ behavior if overwhelmed, frustrated or confused. I allowed students to take some space in the calm area of the room, provided them with emotion visuals they could utilize, encouraged them to use their words and gave them suggestions as to why I believed they were upset. I also increased child safety during recess and lunchtime by proposing paraprofessionals work with a certain group of students, to increase awareness of each student’s location.…

Self-doubt began to fester inside of me as soon as I stepped through the front doors. I expected less and less of myself as time went on.…

Special education is in every school system to help students with disabilities have success in life. According to Artiles and colleagues research, children back in the 1800s were excluded from educational opportunities (Artiles, Harris-Murri, and Rostenberg, 2006, p. 260). Children with disabilities were often segregated into either a separate classroom or separate schools with curriculum that didn’t fit their needs (Artiles, 2006, p. 260). Children were held to low standards, but fortunately that is not the way we see special education today. With the introduction of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act otherwise known in IDEA in 2004 we see more of a movement towards inclusion (Department of Education, 2004).…

As an after school English teacher, I created monthly lesson plans for an hour-long structured after school program for 200 kids between the grades of kindergarten and sixth grade. I worked with students at all levels to improve their verbal and reading skills. I also shared many western holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. I learned very quickly that some days even with the best-laid plans when you work with children, you have to learn to move at the moment and have just a bit more patience. The biggest lesson I learned from these students was to open up and be vulnerable.…

Becoming an educator is one the noblest professions an individual can go into. A teacher can have a powerful impact in a student’s live, both positive and negative. Teaching is one of the few careers that directly affect the future of our nation, and though this may be considered a cliché, the truth of the matter is that you may have a larger impact on children’s lives than some of their parents. You spend hours upon hours with your students, whereas busy or career-driven parents may not have the same opportunities. Becoming an educator is conducive to your home or family life, allows you to see the potential in students, and perhaps most notably, provides the opportunity for you to essentially mold lives within one short calendar year.…
