A universal theme for me moving from Texas to California is overcoming. I was 8 years old when my family moved, and had to overcome knowing no one, a new school, and being out of my comfort zone. At this age you tend to start making good friends, all hang out in groups, and be less adventurous. My parents kept saying, “Find people who like the same things as you, and everything else will be easy”. The next week I did just that.…

Growing up, I was not a child who wanted to go out to play and get messy. Instead, I would much rather stay home reading, drawing, or watching movies. The older I got, the more and more I refused to go out which really bugged my parents. One day, my aunt asked me if I wanted to go on a little trip to San Diego during the summer and I thought “why not?”. I hadn't been outside of the house for a while, so the 2 hour car ride was a breath of fresh air.…

Throughout my time volunteering with various organizations and in my community I have noticed an insidious increase in the poverty levels of American society. These low to no income families are struggling to survive and the effect has been most profound on their children. Lacking needed funds, these children are often malnourished, living in despicable conditions, without a father in the household and often in the ‘care’ of a distant relative who truly cares little or nothing for the child. Proper education is a luxury and without the necessary guidance, encouragement, and help, crime abounds. When these selfsame children grow up they have few resources to get a job and this inability coupled with the conditions within which they live mean…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…

I know what many of us are thinking, we are happy summer has finally arrived. Warmer weather, no rain (hopefully it all came in May), cookouts, vacations, no school, and many other activities. Summer seems as a time when we can take a 3 month long break before we kick back into gear in the fall. I would agree, summer is a time to relax and give thanks (I too am making summer plans) but I know sometimes God has other plans for us.…

Graduation was a time to celebrate my achievements, to celebrate growing up and maturing into adulthood, to celebrate my friends and family that guided me along the way, and most importantly to celebrate one chapter coming to an end, and another one just beginning. The night before graduation I could hardly sleep as I knew that my high school career would soon be over. I got up that next morning, took a shower, put my makeup on, straightened my hair, and put my favorite black dress on, only this time I had my chords, cap, and gown to go with it.…
