Compare And Contrast My High School Education

Improved Essays
My high school experience was filled with plenty of opportunities to succeed and grow, and also my parents took whatever measures necessary to see me flourish. South Effingham thoroughly prepared me for life after high school, with inspiring teachers and counselors who pushed outside of my known boundaries. From talking with students I tutor, they are very driven to achieve their ideal career goal. The thing that these students and I have in common is that we both are and were taking part in all that our schools had to offer. From AP and IB classes, to different campus organizations, they are actively participating in their school. They want to be successful. Some of the other students at Central that I have spoken with do not seem to have …show more content…
I believe these factors matter the most. In comparing the education provided by these two schools, I believe they are very close. However, in terms of student enthusiasm and a student’s desire to be successful they are very different. Only 7 people out of 348 people from my graduating class did not graduate. Of those that did, more than half of them enrolled in a 2 or 4 year university. The academic environment of the school was extraordinarily strict and tough, whether you were in the regular classes or honors and AP classes. Of the students that I have spoken to at Central, very few experience that from their teachers. At Central High, they have excellent facilities, even compared to South Effingham High, however, it makes me wonder with all of these resources and service why the graduation rate is low. I believe that there are external factors besides race, school facilities, and the quality of teachers. I think where they live, who they live with, and how they live is also impacting a student’s ability to succeed. If a student lives with parents who never went to college, or parents that graduated but never saw themselves …show more content…
I’m not saying that there weren’t students who didn’t see themselves with higher education goals, but from the support of the teachers and the environment they were placed in, it helped them see the fallacies in their choice and reasonings to not pursue higher education goals. At Central, though there are some teachers who are trying to push their students further, the students themselves are choosing not to go further. Both schools provided outstanding education, they both thoroughly prepare students for what’s after graduation, but if a student does not take the initiate to learn, then none of this

My old high school, Ramona High School, is described as a small campus. The current population of students is around two thousand and the school ranks low in many categories; grades and test scores are below average. Students from surrounding schools consider our school as ghetto, when in reality it is not. Over the four years I attended the school, it has significantly improved. The number of violent altercations went down and the test scores have vastly improved.…

Schools today have strayed from the original educational goal of educating our population to a higher standard. They have focused on making profit rather than providing the best education they possibly can. Colleges today should focus on helping to spread education throughout the world in any way they can. Graeme Wood’s article “Is College Doomed?” shows a new, nontraditional college called Minerva. Colleges as they are today should be known as businesses rather than schools.…

My observation took place at Gateway Community College Central City Campus as a part of my job as a student services specialist at the front desk counter. I was observing students between 9 A.M. and 12P.M. on a Monday morning, September 12, 2016. I was able to observe about 15 current and prospective students. The college is located in Central City area neighborhood on Buckeye and 12 street, and most of the students at this campus are considered to be “at-risk” students. The student population of Gateway is very diverse, but they have a lot of similarities as well.…

Often the subject of many teenagers' angst, my parents are contrary to the national average in that thy are my inspiration, the reason why I strive for my best. Growing up in a driven family I remember my father telling me that, "whatever I put my hand to do, to do it with all my might". At the time Ii did not know he was paraphrasing a Bible verse, but after passing his religious knowledge to me, I realized the importance of his quoting Scripture. Successful from honest, hard work, my parents have spent their lives incorporating excellence, religious identity, and empowerment into their learning and lifestyle. They have always taught me to stand for what I believe and never settle for less.…

At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…

I was born in Germany with a German mother and an American father. The benefit of being born into a German family and living in Europe for the first ten years of my life was the greatest privilege I experienced throughout my sixteen years of living. However, my father was in the military at the time causing for a slight pressure to always be prevalent for the duration of my younger years. This mainly revolved around the fact that my sister was able to grow up in Germany and I wanted that same opportunity. Soon after these aspirations were formed, they became mere dreams that never would be fulfilled because my dad was given orders to either move to Mississippi or Oklahoma, which both deemed to be the middle-of-nowhere.…
