There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

It is important to develop skills that will not only improve your life but also your college life experience. Upon looking at the General Education Competencies that appears on the class syllabus, I decided on which skills are most important to develop in my humble opinion. One skill for example, that I find particularly essential is the ability to research and examine information, resources, and evidence that are both for academic use and those that are not necessarily for academic use. My reasoning is that, being able to have evidential support to what you are stating is critical since what you say typically follows you for the rest of your life.…

It has been nine years since I have attended college and eleven since I have taken an English course. The first English Composition class I took in 2004, was very dry, and the expectations from what I remember were extremely low. We read excerpts, wrote reflection papers, and that pretty much sums it up. When I reviewed the classes needed for my current degree of interests, I immediately convinced myself English Composition would be the easiest way for me to ease myself back into college. My expectations were low only because of what I experienced before, and I felt this was the place to start in order to help bring my confidence up about returning to college.…

I’ve always considered myself a writer. It was the one hobby I could point to and say I both loved and was semi-decent at. However, taking an AP English course such as this one changed my idea of just what a “writer” is, all the while transforming how I read, interpret, and understand the written work of others. I never expected that I would one day be unable to read something without “arguing” with it in my head, or that that hot seat would change how I felt about and approached my writing. Then again, I never thought this class would be how I learned how to cook either.…

Throughout English Composition 1, I have learned several crucial writing skills. Writing skills that will benefit me in other classes, outside of school, and during my future college years. Over the past three months, class ENC1101 has taught me some major lessons in English writing. My expectation coming into this class was to become a better writer, at least in my eyes. No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…
