Graduation Speech: Migration To Oklahoma City

Decent Essays
I suppose I should explain my issue in more depth tonight. Since I've moved to Oklahoma City about three years ago, I haven't made a single gay friend. I've met acquaintances, sure. I've met people that I've tried and tried again to invite to do things, to be friends with, to see - the same people who I see at events that seem to disrespect or dislike me or my husband, the same people that are completely fake about wanting to be friends or hang out in any larger capacity than seeing what they can take advantage of from us or from me, if they're not trying to sleep with me. Otherwise, it's just people that are only interested in me and us for the fact that we often have the money to cover a night out or a dinner out - and never talk to us otherwise.

Coming to Houston from a country where opportunities are very limited and economy is a challenge for the youthful, has made the last two years a little rough and hopeful at the same time for me and my family. Therefore, school is the most important in my life, after my family; I dedicate my time and my efforts to not become just the first professional in my family, but also to be an exemplary person in society thanks to the values that my parents have instilled in me. Before coming to Houston, I studied three years of Industrial Design in Colombia; although I loved my career, I think that I was too young (15 years old) to appreciate what school was providing me and to be sure what I wanted to do in life. Once I got here I understood that what…

When I was 16 I moved to from California to Texas. During this time, I assume everyone in Texas wears a cowboy hat, boots, talks in a southern accent such as saying y’all and other such stereotypes. I assume the general understanding of Texas from what I was taught as a kid in movies, music, and shows. Once I moved to Texas that that type of thought was used against me, my classmates assume I probably l go to the beach and surf and have met plenty of celebrities when I lived in California. This is an example of REPRESENTATIVENESS HEURISTIC to judge or presume a someone or something relying on past experiences and mental representations to a new situation creating a particular group.…

When I was six years old, I started to get moved around from house to house. I lived in North Chicago, Illinois in a 3-bedroom red and burgundy colored house. I loved playing in the basement with my cousins and sister. We would hang a white hanger from the ceiling to act as a basketball hoop and use balled up socks to shoot baskets. We would stay down there until my granny called us up for dinner.…

“The free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wings in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky. ” If I was to leave Oklahoma, there is one thing I am sure I will always miss: the vibrant sunset of a warm summer day by the lake. When I see the birds fly right over the horizon line, diving into the glimpse of beauty, in a moment that I’m always too slow to catch on camera, I stop and think. Think about every opportunity I have received.…

One cold and dreary day in January, I got home from an uneventful day at school. I never would have guessed what was about to happen or thought that this would ever happen to me. I was just a quiet freshman in high school. My father sat down with my family and told us that we were about to move to Texas. I was both shocked and a little excited to move because I’ve always wanted to go south.…

Good Afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen. When Ann Badmus contacted me to ask whether I’d be willing to speak at this year’s Immigrant Journey Awards luncheon I accepted immediately because her husband and I shared a common past. We were both graduate students at the University of Delaware starting a journey that is taken by many immigrants following the path of higher education to a better future. At that time, though, I did not know that I would be staying on in the U.S. – my goal was to get a doctorate and then return to India armed with the latest knowledge in my chosen area. I thought this was going to be an easy task – I’d talk about myself, my journey from graduate student to president of one of the largest universities in Texas and arguably…

Here I sit, staring at the beaming light of my family's computer writing an essay at the nineteenth hour of the day. I’m not complaining after all It’s quite relaxing, with a bit of music as well as pure silence amidst the remainder of my parent’s residency. Austin, Texas is my birthplace I lived there for the first ten years of my life, six years ago we moved to San Antonio to enable visiting my outer family circle extra often.…

A year or so ago, I sought advice from my lovely daughter about the best way to address our concerns and make positive impact on our son’s life, who is at his teen now. My daughter, heartily explained what I could do right to guide my son and where I could go wrong, as she had have experienced during her teen age. I am so glad that I had the conversation, it made me realize that we (the immigrant parents) are further apart in our upbringing than that of our first generation children, it is literally an ocean apart than one could imagine. These differences could not only stir up annoyance but can also become a major cause of frustration due to the communication gap that exists within us.…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
