"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed - we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal," were the words once spoken by Martin Luther King Jr. His vision was that one day, “little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” These notions are being regarded in our everyday lives. He spoke with ethos, pathos and logos- appealing to a variety of cultures.…

It’s incredible the sacrifices people make everyday to get there education. I look to my dad as my inspiration, when he was growing up in southern Vietnam he walked 3 miles a day to go to school with no shoes. He came from living a life like that and left everything in Vietnam to give a better life for his kids. This makes me appreciate everything I have over here from the opportunities I get to the progress I’ve made. The sacrifices my dad has made for my education is something I’ll always be grateful for.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

I was raised in a loving Christian family that has contributed to my personal values of acceptance, caring, and understanding. My parents continue to be great role models in my life and show me what it means to be a servant leader to the community. My father has been a high school football coach my whole life. As a child in south Florida, I watched my father extend his hand to many young Haitian refugees fleeing an oppressive government. Some of the Haitian boys joined the football team and became a part of a family that was missing as a result of their travels and situation.…

My fellow countrymen... I and all of you should be honored and grateful for the success on the attack against the sleeping ogre of the United States. Without the leadership of our beloved emperor and the efforts of the flowers of the Japanese soldiers, we would be under the perils of the United States' inky black tentacles right now. We were able to sink every single American Pacific carrier, no battleships were left behind. The Americans were greatly unprepared and were no match for our brave imperial forces.…

Coming from a underserved and low income community, I hope to start the dreams that many in my community wished they had. Of course, it would change their lives, however it does change our community. My parents didn’t have the life they always wished for while living in Vietnam. Growing up, I realized that was the lifestyle I could’ve had if I were to be in my parents shoes. Having access to education is such a powerful tool, but like most including my parents, they had no choice when it comes to education.…

I believe in America. Here, Freedom rings, opinions run rapid and we are brave. That being said, in an ideal world there would most definitely be room for improvement. This country is not what our founding fathers envisioned two hundred twenty eight years ago. My vision for America would be complete equality, complete acceptance, and for everyone to be grateful for what they have, instead of worrying about what they do not.…

Poverty taught me to make the most of the little I had in El Salvador. Through my daily struggles I learned to appreciate what truly matters most. For one, I learned to be resourceful and appreciative. I remember playing soccer in the dirt streets of my neighborhood with an old rag ball and feeling pure happiness. As I grew up though, I realized that life may not become much more joyful, but it could certainly become much more comfortable.…

I seek to join Teach For America, because of a longing for something more. After serving a year with City Year San Antonio, I thought I had everything sorted out. I had a job with one of the best web hosting companies in the world and was in a prime spot to show what I am really made of, and while I was eager to shine I felt something was missing. As I continued working this feeling grew stronger and stronger. The feeling became strong that I questioned if it was what I was meant to do in life.…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
