equally. For example, I went to Kelly High School, which is a public high school that was on probation and had a great deal of violence and gang problems. Everyday instead of worrying about homework and exams, I was worried about my safety. Mainly all the teachers in that high school made a hasty generalization regarding the students because they believed that all of them were immature and didn’t care about school; however, the few students that did care, like me, were deprived of having a decent quality of education. I wish I had gone to a high school that had exceptional facilities and outstanding teachers in order to focus more on my classes; however, high schools that had high standards were private, hence, they were luxurious and expensive. …show more content…

In Privilege, Kahn discusses the ‘budding elite’ men and women, and also discusses the difference in expectations placed on the two. While there is more diversity among the student population than there was previously, it is still the upper middle class white students who seem to have the most success both at school, and post-graduation. The modern elites that Kahn describes in his book are still generally wealthy and white, however, unlike their predecessors, they genuinely believe they have worked much harder than all their peers which has allowed them to get ahead. Kahn writes about the concept of “meritocracy,” or the belief that people are chosen entirely on the basis of their talent or abilities.…

My instructors style is strictly reading from the slides without visuals or activities to get me involved in the topic. I find this difficult for me because I am a kinaesthetic learner, meaning that I learn best if I am involved in the lecture ( by activities, class discussion, demonstrations, games, etc) Being a kinaesthetic learner I have realized that I am a hands on person. University is challenging for me because I am not used to having to read and teach myself ideas. Many individuals may assume that one is simply born into their social class. Although one is born into a social class, their birth doesn’t entirely determine the social class. When determining the social stratification of an individual there are characteristics of the individual that come into consideration: consumption capital or income, investment capital, skill capital, social capital or social ties, economic power, political power, and social power. Much of an individuals’ power is reflected by the capital that he or she may have. For example, someone may have a high level of skill capital but low social capital…

The school that I taught at in Philadelphia was different in regards to the socioeconomic status that I grew up in. First and foremost, every student qualified and received free and reduced breakfast and lunch. As each student arrived they would enter the cafeteria to eat their breakfast and line up in the schoolyard, which was all concrete. The area in which I grew up had a tremendous amount of space that included multiple playing fields, courts and playground equipment. About 15% of students in my home district received free and reduced lunch.…
