Essay On 10 Good Things About Public Education

I hear high school students complain about school, the workload, classes, teachers, anything that they can think of. However, when actually speaking to them; they all admit to enjoying learning, it’s mostly the busy work that is bothering them. Being able to actively participate in an intellectual conversation is one of the most rewarding things a person can experience. You’re able to express your own opinion but also listen to someone else’s, and that can help develop your own argument. It is my belief that in today’s society, school is more about the grade then the knowledge. Due to grade inflation and the pressure to be accepted into an outstanding college or university, high school has lost its value of being an institution of learning. When looking at the entire picture, most of a school’s problems can be traced back to grade inflation and a student’s desire to receive an A. If you look at a report card though, you will see that the average grade is describe as a C. An A is an Excellent, and a B is above average. There are plenty of good points that support the way our Education system is now. The article 10 Good Things about Public Education, written by Patte Barth, gives ten examples of how our Public education system is working. Some really strong points that he points out are that High Schools have a higher graduation rate and that the SAT score in mathematics has increased showing the gains in education. There has been a higher graduation rate since 2002, the Graduation Rate has increased from 72.6 percent to 75.5 percent. And the SAT Scores have increased by a significant amount, Barthe does not give the exact amount, and the number of participates taken the SAT has more than doubled so that it is no longer only the Academic elite that are taking
