Do you know someone who has dropped out of high school, possibly a family member or a friend? Well, I do. As a high school graduate, I saw two of my friends not be able to walk across the stage with the rest of our senior class. I can say it was because they were lazy or they weren’t motivated enough. However, I’ve come to realize that, that isn’t always the case. What do you think when you hear the word “dropout”? I don’t know about you but I automatically contemplate something negative. High school dropouts are an example. I asked my dad, what he associates a high school dropout with. His response was crime and low wage. Now this is only one opinion. However, it is common that one would think these things about a dropout. Society as a whole has the tendency of making generalizations such as this. Having a high school diploma has always been looked at as being a great achievement. In the eyes of society you have a greater chance of making something of your life. This could be starting you own business or becoming CEO of a company. Now this isn’t always guaranteed. However, statistically, you are more likely to be employed if you have obtained a high school diploma. The idea is to do bigger and better things; living the American dream. Without a diploma, one is quick to assume that the dropout does not have any means of education nor do they have a job with supportable income. In fact, a dropout will earn $260,000 less over his lifetime than someone who has graduated.…
