Graduation Speech: Eleanor Roosevelt High School

The chatter and noise coming from the room is almost unbearable to hear. It was as if the students had lost their sanity; in this case, for a good reason. They would cease to calm down as their ideas continued to flow and school innovations were on the rise. This was a place where no idea was too low and no suggestion was frowned upon. And for sophomores Grace Cen, Hayley Feinstein and club advisor Mr. Schiliro, student government has forever altered the way they view the work of the PTA, how any beneficial thought should be acted upon with care and caution. Student government has become more and more desirable over the years here at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, and participation as a result has significantly reached a peak. Where both equally put in hard work and determination, one unfairly gains the spotlight, one where the parents outshine the students once again. As we live in a world of democracy, we must take all perspectives into consideration and be optimistic about new possibilities. With students flooding in and others leaving as they wish, a very lenient club which shapes its desires depending on needs takes flight. Just imagine the freedom of choice and not having to be afraid to hide in your shadows anymore. And once again, Grace is eager to share she indeed did student government last year, yet this time changed her approach. She exclaims formerly “I did but I wasn't very active. I think that as a freshman, student government is intimidating because it's full of upperclassmen. This year, I had friends interested in student government, so I felt more comfortable.” In addition to the pressures school brings on students, parents do not experience the same stress. If there’s one thing to know, don’t be scared, we all make mistakes at some point in our lives, but it is how we take action that has the largest impact in our future

As I move through this semester I am learning more and more that teamwork is needed in almost every area of the student affairs profession. If you would have asked me a year ago to draft a conference proposal I would have said it only took one or two people to complete the task needed to submit a good proposal. The last month has changed this previous mindset though, as I have found it takes many dedicated individuals to help draft a good proposal. I decided to work with Rachael Kowbel who is the Director of Admission for the College of Dentistry and we drafted a proposal discussing how closed-door student panels affect incoming students in both a positive and negative way. Below this paper will discuss how the team was formed, my individual role on the team and how all of the information came together during the process.…

Student A’s journey to defining her presidential role occurred within her first month and a half of her presidency. Her presidency was mapped out by her self determination to create a vision and authentic her role. Phase three was established during a conflict with another member who was not meeting the organization’s requirements. Student A stayed true to herself in this situation by confronting the situation with confidence and did not rely on me to advise her. She defined her identity as the president and kept her stance on the…

Student government taught me to speak up whenever I had an opinion or when I felt a valuable opinion needed to be heard. Student government taught me that it doesn’t matter who I work with, as long as we collaborate efficiently and effectively to finish the job. Student government taught me that I don’t need recognition from others to know I am successful. Student government taught me to be the rock that people will miss when I am gone. However, at the end of the day I put on my socks, one sock at a…

When Mountain House High School was inaugurated, it lacked one of the most crucial elements of the high school experience: clubs. Eager to share my passion for business, I founded DECA to give members exposure to real world working environments, state conferences, and opportunities to present their knowledge. Success was easy to obtain as post-conference enthusiasm spread first amongst members and then the rest of the school. Because of the first year’s success, the next brought many new members who were all eager to attend the DECA state conference.…

I am interested in going to Badger Girls State because this would be an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity and a privilege for me. My ancestors have always been involved in politics, from signing the Mayflower Compact, being written about in George Washington’s letters, fighting for women’s suffrage, and even now, voting, and voicing their opinions in the elections. I not only grew up learning about politics, but want to pursue a career as a political science teacher. I don’t believe my generation fully understands politics and how important it is for them to vote and get involved in politics. I want to change this in my own classroom.…

Parental expectations are a reality in almost everyone’s life and they often either place great stress on the children or turn them into careless individuals without a sense of achievement. A hands off parent will likely impose low expectations on their children; this child will live a carefree life where they are required to impose their own structures and life goals while also maintaining a positive yet shallow relationship with their parent. On the other hand, another student’s parent’s may have high expectations of them and expect them to be a straight A student and ranked in the top five of their class. This student will likely be constricted to a tight box and feel the need to constantly gain their parents approval which will put them…

Essay Question 2 In high school I participated in the student government by joining the Student Council and becoming the Corresponding Secretary. During the last week of my junior year, I attended South Dakota's Boy's State. For me this was an interesting experience because for the first time I was surrounded not only by the brightest students in my school, but the best and brightest from the entire state. Overall, this was an eye-opening experience because everyone attending had thoughts to contribute to running our own state. Those who became involved had their own personal perspective that was shaped by the social, economic, and geographical characteristics of their home region. The most intriguing aspect of the week had nothing to do with actual government policy.…

There was never a dull moment due to the wide range of diversity, talent, and personalities of students. I made amazing lifelong friends that appreciated my presence, ideas, and personality. Graduation was a time to celebrate my achievements, to celebrate growing up and maturing into adulthood, to celebrate my friends and family that guided me along the way, and most importantly to celebrate one chapter coming to an end, and another one just beginning. The night before graduation I could hardly sleep as I knew that my high school career would soon be over. I got up that next morning, took a shower, put my makeup on, straightened my hair, and put my favorite black dress on, only this time I had my chords, cap, and gown to go with it.…
