College Writing Habits

Imagine, a college freshman is handed back their first paper, only to receive a nightmarish grade. They rack their brain for how this could happen; they had always earned exemplary grades in their high school English class, but they were unprepared for the college standards of writing. Regrettably, too many college freshmen are met with this exact dilemma. Their high school teachers do not show them how to write, but instead what to write, and leave their students completely unaware of what awaits them in college. Consequently, college freshman are vulnerable to repeating their bad habits and continuing the cycle of lower level writing. Undoubtedly, students are unprepared for the requirements of college writing by reason of their high school’s …show more content…
Although this is a shock to most students, the writing structure in college is vastly different. College freshmen are often prone to reverting back to their bad writing habits, yet this practice is extremely detrimental to their grades. The also regularly overlook the process of outlining their plans. Providing and practicing their planning within a college-level structure is essential for a student to write successfully. Without structure, a student may ramble on and completely pass over the supporting points of their claim and make their response a confusing mess to readers. It also tends to leave their professors dissatisfied with their writing, as it fails to follow and form of order or …show more content…
The five paragraph essay is often the bane of many college freshmen. Although it is a form of organization, the five paragraph template is just that: a template. It constricts students in their creativity and independent thinking and limits them from learning how to organize an essay in any other format. The process versus product battle is also evident in the contrast between high school and college. Even though college focuses on the process of writing, high school is only concerned with the final product. Often times, high school teachers just want an answer and do not care how the student devised

The transition from High School can often times be very frustrating for students. L. Lennie Irvin opened my eyes to one of the bad habits I picked up on in High school. The habit of straying from the topic or theme could cause me to fail not only papers in English but my other courses as well. I personally had a hard time with English my first semester of college. In High school I was always at the top of my class and my teachers would tell me how great of a writer I was.…

The writing expected from college courses is one that most are unfamiliar with. Although students learn basic English skills throughout grade school and up to high school, most of the advanced steps are forgotten by the time the student is to enter college. Paired with this, are the nontraditional students, who haven’t studied advanced academic language for long periods of time. Professors are expecting students of all kinds of study to have a high academic vocabulary and high writing skill. Often times a gap in remedial writing courses within the first semester or so.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

College Writing And Reading For The Incoming Freshman The transition between High School and University writing can be challenging to the ill-prepared student. In high school we might have gotten great feedback from teachers about our work: “great job”, “very good” etc, but in college our professors might comment differently most likely because they are searching for something different in college writing. Most often because professors expect a different style of writing than that of a high school class, such as a more developed opinion on the subject rather than a summary of what you researched. The most significant differences are visible in structure, research, argument, and format. In college writing, we move away from the standard…

He showed me that with every argument comes a counter argument; adding a counter argument reinforced my argument greatly. Another technique I applied to my essays with Professor Castro’s instruction was planning. In high school, planning an essay seemed like a waste of time because the assignments were always just five paragraph, five sentence essays. Since we had to write these essays in such a short amount of time for tests, I was able to produce the work the night before. On the other hand, Professor Castro has shown the divergence between high school and college; planning and editing are two essential steps in writing.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

College-level writing is a necessity to be able to reach some of the goals I have set for me, not only throughout my college days, but for my future career as well. I would like to go into politics some day, and as many know that requires a strenuous amount of writing if you plan on persuading people to vote for you. So the earlier I master writing the better off I will be in the future, when I have a big speech coming up, or maybe if I go into business as a corporate official need to make some statements. Either way, being able to write collegiately is a necessity no matter what route I take in fulfilling a successful and proper role in the writing side of my career. When someone gets to that level where they can type a paper with little to…

College is intimidating. Essays, lab reports, quizzes, and tests, among other assignments, creep their way into students’ lives and make many attending university want to cry—myself included. Only after taking Honors English 100, taught by Professor Garland, do I have a better grasp of the English language and the tools to write successfully at a college level.…
