My Essay Format In College

Improved Essays
College is intimidating. Essays, lab reports, quizzes, and tests, among other assignments, creep their way into students’ lives and make many attending university want to cry—myself included. Although I am a Biology major, many of my classes require the ability to write well in a formal academic voice. I would like to think that I started my college career knowing how to write in a formal manner; however, that was not the case. Only after taking Honors English 100, taught by Professor Garland, do I have a better grasp of the English language and the tools to write successfully at a college level. One of the first realizations I had about my writing is that I often repeat the same word or phrase too many times. The second essay the class had …show more content…
In fact, I learned that most the time an essay with not follow that format in college. First, if the minimum requirement for pages is more than three, having only five paragraphs would make for five very long paragraphs that can get difficult to follow. I discovered that you can have more than one introductory paragraph if it would your essay better. For example, in the research-based essay on homelessness, I wrote seven paragraphs before the three paragraphs that proved my thesis statement (Fighting Homelessness in Hawaii). Those seven paragraphs were important because within them I explained the history of homelessness in America and in Hawaii, and I also included a paragraph on the opposing view (Fighting Homelessness in Hawaii). “Fighting Homelessness in Hawaii” is the essay I am most proud of writing; the many paragraphs in the beginning helped my arguments to shine later on in the essay. I learned that to have a more creative and successful paper, I need to be more flexible with the format. Every essay is different in terms of how much background is needed and where naysayer arguments are

In the article What is “Academic” Writing by L. Lennie Irvin, a personal connection made was in his statement, “As a new college student, you may have a lot of anxiety and questions about the writing you’ll do in college”(Irvin 3) and “[This will be your] only class(es)... where you will only focus on learning how to write”(Irvin 3). Indeed, as a college student in high school, my body shivers at the sound of the word ‘essay’; however, with the right teaching, I have come a long way. Assuredly, in class we have only focused on writing ethics, which in turn has helped me practice to strengthen my writing skills. Although writing essays can at times trigger my anxiety due to cluelessness and countless questions, as essays go by, I become more…

The writing expected from college courses is one that most are unfamiliar with. Although students learn basic English skills throughout grade school and up to high school, most of the advanced steps are forgotten by the time the student is to enter college. Paired with this, are the nontraditional students, who haven’t studied advanced academic language for long periods of time. Professors are expecting students of all kinds of study to have a high academic vocabulary and high writing skill. Often times a gap in remedial writing courses within the first semester or so.…

After reading Paul Graham’s essay entitled “The Age of the Essay”, Michael Dickens brings up the a great point of spending one month per semester on writing essays. I too believe this is a great way for students to develop unique writing skills or even strive to improve on their writing. I’ve notice in class we don’t take much time to learn how to write a proper essay. We just read articles, literature and write it into a traditional hamburger format essay being intro, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. This does not allow me to improve on my writing nor challenges me to improve my writing in any way.…

In high-school, one is told what to write about and have to follow a certain type of rubric. When a teacher will usually assign an essay that will be about 2-3 pages long, with an introduction, body, and conclusion. In college, students are supposed to write in a different manner. For example, students in English 5A are taught to write in a more personal, public or academic style of writing. We are taught that for a personal essay, one is supposed to write using arguments and explanations about how one feels about a certain situation.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Five-Paragraph Construct To strengthen my misconception of the five paragraph format, I have researched information from articles and books. These sites have been an incredible way of seeing my construct in different points of views. Although I will be including an article that expresses a good feedback of this construct, I have found various facts and opinions that strongly support my misconception. Nonetheless, just because you were taught this inferior format does not mean you will show up to college and be doomed for your English class. The five paragraph construct can help you to be aware of keeping your essay well organized.…

According to more than 2,462 teachers polled from throughout the United States, this informal style of writing is sneaking its way into academic essays and reports (Martin, 2013). Unfortunately, this has led to a decline in student’s writing abilities that is becoming progressively more evident in all types of communication. With the line between a formal and informal style of writing and language blurred, the College Board, which administers the SAT college admissions test, reports that fewer students have writing skills on par with what is expected for acceptance to college. As of 2012, less than half of the nation’s high school graduates were determined to be ready for college-level writing based on their SAT scores (Martin,…

Written language is a trait known to be only possessed by mankind. Although other species may have audible forms of communication, man is able to record and document his thoughts, feelings, or events that have unfolded in a way that can be viewed multiple times without him having to use his voice over and over. Literacy is a skill that adults in the United States are expected to have; but the level of your literacy says a lot about you and can have a tremendous impact on what career you end up in. Five Paragraph vs. Essais From a young age, I have always considered an essay to contain five paragraphs. Starting in elementary school I learned that an essay consists of five paragraphs, and from then on out that is the outline for an essay that I used in my writing. I used this outline in many situations, such as simple warm ups in class to get started to much bigger things like the SAT and AP testing. Reading Paul Lynch’s, “The Sixth Paragraph Essay: A Re-Vision of the Essay,” has given me a different perspective on the five paragraph essay. Lynch’s article is informative and persuasive about other essays, such as Michel de Montaigne’s; however, he does not give enough credit to how useful the five paragraph essay actually is for beginner writers.…

Once I decide on a topic the rest comes easy to me, getting started is the hardest part for me. One of the things I disliked about essays in that class was that if, I remember correctly every essay assigned in that class had the five-paragraph structure. I can see why the teacher liked the structure, because it required us to have quotes and evidence from the text followed by our analysis. It also made sure that we did not leave out a topic and concluding sentence. However, I felt like it limited our ideas, or forced us to put in something that really did serve much of a purpose in the essay just to fit the structure.…
