Graduation Speech: Chautauqua Children's School

I'm coming back next year. You bet! And I have. Every year of my life.

This chant has been stuck in my head since I was three, and my hot pink Crocs entered the front playground of Chautauqua Children’s School. I couldn't get enough. One would think that I’d be sick of school and want nothing to do with more learning in the summer. Not me. A lifetime of summers at Chautauqua Institution is a gift. Chautauqua's mission of lifelong exploration and discovery has molded me, inspired me, and created and nurtured a desire to learn.

How do you explain it? What is Chautauqua and how does it silently get under your skin, becoming part of you? Nancy Gibbs, Time Magazine managing editor, aptly describes the Promise of Chautauqua as “roots and wings.”

Friends are important, but were they more important than applying to the magnet program at JL Mann Academy to focus on science? The uncertainty of going where I knew nobody scared me. I walked into the unknown! The opportunity to be challenged academically has been invigorating. Added bonus – making new …show more content…
I had the opportunity to earn Key Club volunteer hours at a local YMCA outdoor center. I took a deep breath and marched in, a “confident” smile on my face, among the spiders, snakes and who know what else to clear out sheds, move logs, and clear brush. Mission accomplished. I was invited back for more. Snakes and creepy crawlies aren’t that bad.

After completing a summer internship at Parkside Pediatrics, I decided I would like to work there. One problem – they had never hired a student. I summoned all my courage as I contacted them to ask for a job. They hired me to a newly created position, “Medical Data Entry Specialist.”

I have come full circle. As a teacher at Chautauqua Children's School, I encourage 3 year-olds to pluck the strings of a cello, play in the woods, and create castles in the sandbox. It's my turn to nurture new Chautauqua roots. Chautauqua continues to deepen my roots and has strengthened my wings to venture into the unknown and face new challenges.

Return to the place that fuels and sustains my love of adventure, engages my mind and my passion to learn? I’m coming back next year! You

Being a member of the Appalachia Volunteers of Boston College has been one of my most defining experiences in the past 2 and a half years. The Appalachia Volunteers Program is a yearlong program than includes weekly Sunday night meetings based on the program’s mission “to love, learn, and serve” and culminates in a weeklong service trips to the Appalachian region and beyond. Through both the meetings and my experiences on these service trips I have gained new perspectives and learned more about myself than I had ever thought possible and I will be forever grateful for that. Love is all around. The Appalachia Volunteers Program introduced me to the concept of agape, and showed me this unconditional, selfless love first hand.…

Good Morning, Mount Alvernia parents and friends support network, college leadership team and the board of directors. As you know, this year marks the 60th anniversary of Mount Alvernia College, educating women in the Franciscan tradition. In order to celebrate this incredible milestone, I propose the school holds a ball with a theme that looks back on our journey over the last 60 years. Over 65% of those surveyed opted for a formal ball making it the most viable option. The proposed theme for this ball is a sentimental recollection of the past 60 years.…

    1) What important influences led to your choice of a major in the liberal arts and sciences? Throughout the process of deciding what to pursue academically, I realized that I have a lot of varying interests. I am passionate about concepts surrounding identity, culture, place and how these interact with more concrete concepts such as science and technology. I knew I wanted to eventually pursue something which involved agriculture and also environmentalism, which are two topics that I have been interested in since I was very young.…

Being a student at Queen’s University taught me that the opportunities we seek out teach us about our character and more importantly, about our passions in life; they help us to define our goals and will lead us to be successful. I have been fortunate to gain valuable experience as a Queen’s student, orphanage volunteer, and drop in center volunteer. My experiences shaped my understanding of teaching and learning processes as I learned the valuable qualities that are exhibited by successful educators that establish supportive learning environments for their students. While working in Romanian orphanages this past summer, I learned how each child presents their own challenges as they learn, and communicate differently. In a short time with a great deal of patience and dedication I learned enough of the language as I led games, bible studies, and helped children with conflict resolution.…

My perspectives and life completely changed when I was accepted into Bioscience High School. Being admitted was a huge achievement because the application and interview process was rigorous. One of the requirements for the application was to create a binder portfolio that would represent my worth ethic and what I could offer to the school. Now, I have experienced what it is like to be part of the Bioscience community. At first, the teaching methods and their curriculum was difficult to adjust to because their constructivist ways of teaching was different from the traditional way of education I had been in all of my life.…

Looking back on these last eight years at Rideau, all that I can say is - wow. I’ve had a rollercoaster ride at this school, one that rivals ones at Disneyland and Six Flags with its bumpiness, great speed, and overall fun. I haven’t been without my troubles at this school - everyone has them. But more than anything, we all had a blast learning at this school, and we’ll sorely miss it when we leave for Western. Kindergarten was something else.…

Phi Delta Kappan, 86, 649-651 Summary Creating a community structure is not enough to change a school’s current culture, although professional learning communities, or PLCs have great potential for bringing about advances in teaching and learning. In order for PLCs to be effective, district and school leaders must provide structures, strategies and support to help teachers develop their teaching skills. Schools in both Cincinnati and Philadelphia who had established PLCs with small teams of teachers were observed by the authors.…

Introduction For the observation of a school and community event, I observed Back to School (BTSN) at Van Ness Elementary School. Since I am a teacher at Van Ness, I had to observe the event as if I was a community member who knew nothing of the school. This allowed me to closely watch how teachers interacted with parents, their effort in welcoming all visitors and how they delivered important information. As I reflect on this experience and my knowledge about the initiatives, programs and policies at Van Ness, I started to analyze some of the school’s efforts and their needs in strengthening their school and family partnership.…

Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
