Good Evening,

Thank you so much for having me today, it really is an honor to be a part of this magnificent organization that brings forth different communities and unites them as one, with one goal; obtaining a better future. I have been a member of the Boys & Girls Club for ten years now, however, I did not get to where I am today out of coincidence and this has a story that begins with my mom. My mom was raised in Mexico where she pursued to go to a University and have a successful future, however she was at an economic disadvantage, which was an obstacle in reaching her goals. However, she met my “dad” who promised her to help her reach her goals. What she did not know was that she had been lied too and instead of a bright future, she

Once she got pregnant with my sister and then me, she new that she needed to get away from him because she wanted us to have the bright future that she could no longer have. She left both my sister and me in Mexico under the care of our Grandma when I was one and half and moved to California to pursue the American Dream. She had both me and my sister enrolled in private schools, where she wanted us to get the best education, however when I was six, she decided that we should both come to California with her.
In the first month after we arrived she signed us up in Taekwondo where she hoped that we would get all our energy out before getting home as well as staying active. In that same month she had us join the Boys and Girls Club because she worked from morning to night and had no one that could take care of us. Sometimes I wonder why, out of every city, town, and suburb in the entire country of the United States, my grandmother chose to move to Lynn, Massachusetts. A city otherwise rich in history, but unluckily dubbed over by an ingloriously annoying jingle, “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you’ll never come out the way you came in.” I heard it chanted through elementary school hallways, mocked by middle school kids, and hummed by high schoolers. You would think its omnipresence would keep away travelers, but, then again, my grandmother didn’t speak English. She came over from the Dominican Republic thirty-six years ago, with my mother and her five other kids.…

The Boys & Girls Club started in 1860 by three woman who believed that boys who roamed the streets should have the option of a different outlet - a more positive one (Bgca.org, 2018). Today, the mission of the Boys & Girls Club is “to enable all young people, especially those who need [them] most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens” (Bgca.org, 2018). They seek to fulfill a vision to “provide a world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who enters [their] doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle” (Bcga.org, 2018). I will not be returning to Morehouse for the Spring 2017 semester, and I am sadden to renounce my current Glee Club membership status. This has been a remarkable experience filled with memories I will cherish. Being in the Glee Club gave me the courage to try new things, without feeling intimidated or inadequate. For my service hours for Public Health class, I served at the Boys and Girls Club where I worked with children from the age of five to twelve. Upon arriving at the Boys and Girls club last week, I came across a few thoughts of how it would be to work with children. The first thought in my head was that working with children isn’t going to be challenging and might be the easiest service I have done. I expected the work to be very stress-free and less overwhelming than any other services. Another expectation I had was that volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club would be like any other experience, like the one of many times when I have tutored kids.…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…

Graduation was a time to celebrate my achievements, to celebrate growing up and maturing into adulthood, to celebrate my friends and family that guided me along the way, and most importantly to celebrate one chapter coming to an end, and another one just beginning. The night before graduation I could hardly sleep as I knew that my high school career would soon be over. I got up that next morning, took a shower, put my makeup on, straightened my hair, and put my favorite black dress on, only this time I had my chords, cap, and gown to go with it.…
