“And she introduced me to the sound of my own voice. She gave me a stage. A platform.” On May 25th, 2016 at the Harvard Graduation School of Education Convocation, Donovan Livingston delivered a universally acclaimed speech on the way education helped shaped who he is and how we should stand up for the right to be educated so we can make our hopes and dreams a reality. The point I want to get across is my perspective of the speech, which I saw as opportunity and hope. Opportunity and hope are the main things that helped me realize why education is important, thus clearing the pathway for a better future. Back in high school, specifically freshman and sophomore year, I used to aim for average. For example if all I needed was a C to pass a class or an assignment, that’s what I aimed for and if I ended up getting B or an A, I wouldn’t care. Livingston uses great imagery to convey that many people in the past and currently didn’t have either the money or privilege to have the kind of education I’m getting. “Over the rustling of our chains, Take them off. Un-cuff us. Unencumbered by the lumbering weight Of poverty and privilege, Policy and ignorance.” This quote struck a chord with me because it made me go wow, I’m here taking this opportunity for granted where there are probably thousands of people who would kill for this kind of …show more content…
Usually when i hear or think about graduation speeches, I think of generic same old speech that is supposed to inspire you. My expectations for this speech were just about the same. I was really surprise how it was written as a spoken word poem and was presented as such. It definitely made me more interested in the work after this, it was very unique and original which is what I love. Livingston powerful message reminded me just when you think there 's nothing left you can do, opportunity and hope will always be there to show you can always better

The Values of the Athenians in the Hospital: Florence Nightingale In "My Graduation Speech," Neil Postman, an author and professor at New York University, asserts that the values and ideas originated by two ancient groups over 2,500 years ago still survive and influence us today. In his essay, Postman presented the Athenians and the Visigoths, the former virtuous and creative, and the latter crude and careless, with the suggestion that we all "must be on one side or the other. " We owe the Athenians and their value of "beauty, reason, and moderation" much of the art, literature and language within the world today. They cherished knowledge, valued social restraint, and took interest in public affairs. Florence Nightingale, the founder of…

Throughout reading “Commencement Speech, Kenyon College”, I found this short story very inspiring to read as I found myself doing more research on this essay because I was so interested in it. Reading this once through I got the feeling of more of a pessimistic and lower toned feeling sine suicide is mentioned and reading the bio notes of David Foster Wallace and how he suffered with depression and committing suicide I realized this was more of a final speech of what he wished he could have still in himself. “It’s the matter of my choosing to do the work of show how altering or getting free of my natural, hardwired default-settling” (309) I believe in this statement with my whole heart, to me I believe that I used to get just go through the motions of life and wasn’t really living but recently one of my friends came to me and told me she wanted to kill herself because she didn’t see the point in life and though I don’t know if I ever could get to that point, I told her that every day we would hang out, every day we would make the most of everyday and every day I would remind her why life was so wonderful to live and how lucky we are for this opportunity.…

The idea that education is something that is to be sought after and beneficial to its recipients is universally known. What happens, however, when only a portion of the population has access to a higher level of learning after high-school? That is the question Margaret A. Miller proposes in her essay “The Privileges of the Parents” which was published in the 2008 issue of Change. There is a myriad of reasons why certain people cannot succeed in higher fields of learning- reasons that are exclusive to each individual, but the main culprit is lack of educated parents which is a precursor to uneducated children. It is a cycle that is ever present in our culture.…

“The nation is clearly no longer content with mediocrity with just getting by. It is demanding excellent education for all” “It implies an end to the double standard and education in education, a double standard that gives high quality teaching to students and exclusive suburbs and inferior schooling to children in slums, they give preference to some states over others” You would think that this quote by Francis Keppel, in 1965, then the Commissioner of Education, who was the driving force behind the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 could have been quoted by Precedent. George W. Bush as he was implementing No Child Left Behind act of 2002. So what does the Elementary and Secondary Act of 1965 have to do with the No Child…

John F. Kennedy was president from 1961 to 1963, in the height of the Cold War. During his presidency, the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred, which was the closet that the United States and Soviet Union ever came to war. Less than a year after this event, in 1963 President Kennedy gave an impassioned commencement speech at American University. His speech was not filled with inflammatory rhetoric, like calling the Soviet Union an “evil empire” as Ronald Reagan famously would. His speech instead, called for peace, disarmament, and cooperation between the two countries.…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
