As an aspiring engineer, English is a subject that have never come easy to me. For my first two years of high school, I registered for A level English courses, as opposed to Honors level courses. Due to a lack of confidence developed from a naive lack of interest in the English, I was nervous that I would not fare well in the higher level courses. However, after a couple good years in lower level classes, I took a leap of faith and transitioned to Honors English. It was in honors English that I began to hone my reading and writing skills, but not after a rocky transition. I was both a slow reader, and poorly motivated writer. It was not that I couldn’t write well, it was more that I couldn’t find the motivation to write about a topic I was not interested in. Both of these attributes lead me to register in A level English courses, where I would have room to grow and gain confidence in my reading and writing abilities. Luckily for me, I was assigned to the same teacher for both my freshman and sophomore year, and my progress did not go unnoticed. After achieving an A- in my freshman English course, I was considering taking the leap to honors, but I was not quite sure if I was ready. After consulting my teacher, I decided to take the safe route and stick to A level for a second year. I have always had mixed opinions about this choice, as I felt the I would have gained a stronger foundation had I took the leap to honors, but staying in A level greatly improved my confidence. Less than halfway through my sophomore year, my teacher and I both realized that I was more than ready to take on the challenge of a more rigorous course load, and when placements came around, I enrolled in Honors English for my Junior year. This would prove to be a challenge, but a great learning experience that I do not
