As an aspiring engineer, English is a subject that have never come easy to me. For my first two years of high school, I registered for A level English courses, as opposed to Honors level courses. Due to a lack of confidence developed from a naive lack of interest in the English, I was nervous that I would not fare well in the higher level courses. However, after a couple good years in lower level classes, I took a leap of faith and transitioned to Honors English. It was in honors English that I began to hone my reading and writing skills, but not after a rocky transition. After writing arguable the best essay I have ever written, I had high hopes for my senior year, only to realize that there is always room for improvement when it comes to …show more content…
I was both a slow reader, and poorly motivated writer. It was not that I couldn’t write well, it was more that I couldn’t find the motivation to write about a topic I was not interested in. Both of these attributes lead me to register in A level English courses, where I would have room to grow and gain confidence in my reading and writing abilities. Luckily for me, I was assigned to the same teacher for both my freshman and sophomore year, and my progress did not go unnoticed. After achieving an A- in my freshman English course, I was considering taking the leap to honors, but I was not quite sure if I was ready. After consulting my teacher, I decided to take the safe route and stick to A level for a second year. I have always had mixed opinions about this choice, as I felt the I would have gained a stronger foundation had I took the leap to honors, but staying in A level greatly improved my confidence. Less than halfway through my sophomore year, my teacher and I both realized that I was more than ready to take on the challenge of a more rigorous course load, and when placements came around, I enrolled in Honors English for my Junior year. This would prove to be a challenge, but a great learning experience that I do not

The transition from High School can often times be very frustrating for students. L. Lennie Irvin opened my eyes to one of the bad habits I picked up on in High school. The habit of straying from the topic or theme could cause me to fail not only papers in English but my other courses as well. I personally had a hard time with English my first semester of college. In High school I was always at the top of my class and my teachers would tell me how great of a writer I was.…

It has been nine years since I have attended college and eleven since I have taken an English course. The first English Composition class I took in 2004, was very dry, and the expectations from what I remember were extremely low. We read excerpts, wrote reflection papers, and that pretty much sums it up. When I reviewed the classes needed for my current degree of interests, I immediately convinced myself English Composition would be the easiest way for me to ease myself back into college. My expectations were low only because of what I experienced before, and I felt this was the place to start in order to help bring my confidence up about returning to college.…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

Looking back at my high school English courses, I have reminisced on some of the challenges I have encountered. I took honors English each year with the exception of my junior year where I took on the challenge of taking AP Composition and Language. During my AP class we focused on writing argumentative essays and two other types of writing. The other three years, we wrote one to two page essays on a reflection of novels that we read during the year. If we met the basic criteria (introduction, three body paragraphs, conclusion and stayed on topic) then we would mainly get an A. I would say that a few of my strengths in reading would be annotating and note taking as I read the text or novel.…

This has helped my work flow more and added a keen sense of intelligence. I have seen much improvement in my essays but have seen the most significant change from my first entrance essay “My season”, to my major events essay “Wayward Feelings”, to my final argumentative essay “A Helpful Hand”.…

I’ve chosen to focus on “Exploration and Argumentation” as the subject of this reflective introduction, specifically looking at my argument paper, “Abortion: Right or Wrong?” as a reference to the importance of this learning outcome. I chose to focus on this particular learning outcome because it was the most difficult essay for me to create. While writing this essay it was difficult for me to understand and reciprocate the opposing viewpoint. Understanding an unfamiliar idea and giving ideas for or against a topic is key to creating a fluent argumentative essay.…
