I knew from the very beginning I wanted to be a teacher. I am now going to Kent State
University in hopes I achieve my goal of graduating and getting a bachelor’s degree. My major is Integrated Language Arts and I want to be a high school English teacher. My personality and values correspond with the future occupation I hope to have one day. It is important that someone’s personality characteristics match those of the characteristics someone posses in the occupation of one’s choice. The degree I am currently pursuing is a bachelor’s degree in the College of Education, Health, and Human Services with my major being Integrated Language Arts. I have always wanted to be a teacher since I was very little, I just didn’t know specifically what age group I was going to end up teaching. I knew throughout high school which subjects were easier for me, including English being my best. I wanted to becoming a teacher because I want to help students, I want students to have a safe classroom environment and to be comfortable. I also wanted to be a teacher in a subject I was good at and thoroughly enjoyed, so that I would enjoy teaching it to my future students. Since becoming a high school teacher involves become an expert in a particular subject, I would obviously like to become an “expert” in a subject I do well in. My reasons for wanting to become a teacher are definitely personal, and not for financial reasons. As many people are aware, teachers don’t necessarily have one of the highest paying jobs. From the personality characteristics discussed in class or from the personality test, I would say my personality fits my career choice perfectly. Examples of the characteristics from the test included “extraordinarily caring, social, and popular people, always eager to help.” It also mentioned, in the career tab, that education is a suggestion with “The Consul’ personality type. I want to become a teacher because I am eager to help and being social is part of …show more content…
In the book it mentions criticisms and generalizations. Examples from the book say that English teachers are ‘pigeonholed’ and have the ability to shape their students negatively. A criticism or generalization would be that English teachers chose their profession based off the fact that it is a safe field and you have the ability to make a difference. The book was helpful in seeing my major from a different standpoint. I agree with the criticisms and generalizations, but that does influence my decision in becoming a teacher. In four years, I will be graduating from Kent State University. I hope to achieve my goal of becoming a high school English teacher. I have had this goal for a long time, since I was little. I know myself and I know my personality. Having a career in education is the best fit for me. There is nothing more rewarding than being a teacher and knowing you can make a difference.
