I knew from the very beginning I wanted to be a teacher. I am now going to Kent State
University in hopes I achieve my goal of graduating and getting a bachelor’s degree. My major is Integrated Language Arts and I want to be a high school English teacher. My personality and values correspond with the future occupation I hope to have one day. It is important that someone’s personality characteristics match those of the characteristics someone posses in the occupation of one’s choice. The degree I am currently pursuing is a bachelor’s degree in the College of Education, Health, and Human Services with my major being Integrated Language Arts. I want to be a high school English teacher, but the teaching licensure in Ohio is to be able to teach grades 7th through 12th. The courses that are relevant for my major are classes involving various English courses. My major includes becoming an expert in my subject of my choice. Other courses I plan on taking are in American Sign Language. I have a requirement for a foreign language credit, and that is where I plan to take ASL. I actually considered becoming an ASL teacher before deciding to pursue my career being an English teacher. I had taken ASL in high school and enjoyed it. I believe I can have a bachelor’s degree and get the job I want with this degree. The only thing that would benefit from having a higher degree, a master’s degree, would be a larger salary.
