Something that I have learned to do is to compliment other people, because even though it may not change your day, it could drastically change theirs. It seems like such a simple thing, but much like appreciating your teachers, it goes a long way. Boys and girls alike struggle with body image and feeling accepted, and often times it just takes one comment to make or break their day. One day during my sophomore year, I was walking down an empty hallway and I noticed another girl that I had never met before walking the opposite direction. I said to her, “Hey, I really like your outfit, it looks nice!” and she smiled, and we both continued on our separate ways. Three months later, she came up to me and told me that that one comment I had made to her convinced her that there was still good in the world. She had been struggling with depression, and that one simple phrase had shown her the light she had lost. Not every experience will be as dramatic and life changing as the one I had, but I promise you, just telling someone their hair looks nice or they have cool shoes can have an impact on their life. Your mental, emotional, and physical state are all important, they are all part of you, so take care of them. Make sure you get enough sleep at night, even if you don’t finish your homework, because not getting enough sleep will impact you more than not finishing a worksheet. Exercise, because not only will it make you feel better about yourself, it will also help with your emotional state. Make sure you eat, because you need all the energy you can get through the long days of high school. I didn’t find this out until halfway through my 10th grade year, and looking back, I can see how much of a difference it has made. I am happier, I have more energy, I don’t get as stressed as easily, and I just feel better all around. Take care of yourself and your body, and it will take care of
