Personal Statement: Introduction To Multiculturalism

So you want to know about me? That is great; I am my own favorite subject. While I have never been one to dwell on my own past (why bother, the future is forward not back) I will do it this one time. First though we must get the preliminaries out of the way. We are all here for the class “Introduction to Multiculturalism” you as a teacher and I as a student. I am a student here first and foremost because it was an economy of choices. I needed to check off three boxes on my graduation report card to get my first degree in the spring of 2016; this class checked off two of the three boxes. That said, the class did sound interesting, but other than learning about other cultures I really had no preconceived notions one way or the other about the …show more content…
White as white can be. I am so white that I go from regular to sunburn in T-Minus 5 minutes. In all seriousness though, I believe you want my family background. I know the background for some of my family, but not all of it; frankly it has never been a subject that interested me very much. My grandfather on my mother’s side traced his family line to Eastern Europe: mainly Prussia (territory prior to WWI that is now Germany and Poland). I do not know about the descent of my mother’s mother. On my father’s side the Reese’s were from all over. I know from talking to an aunt that we have: German, Scandinavian, Welsh (Reese is the “western” version of the name “Rhys,”) Texan, and Cherokee. I know Texan is not a race, but I include it as they are a strange and interesting people all on their own. I am unsure of my father’s mother’s lineage; but I have been told that everyone in the USA with her last name, Ogletree, are “related” to each other. I cannot confirm the validity of this claim though; but I thought I heard it from an Aunt who is our families’ resident genealogist. My father confirmed that her ancestors (I guess my ancestors as well) owned large plantations in the south. That means it is highly likely that her side of the family were owned slaves as nearly every person I have encountered in life with the last name Ogletree is African American (when freed the slaves would typically take the last name of their owners as they didn’t have last names of their own). …show more content…
I would say my grandfather is the closest thing to a role model or hero for me. He was awesome (I don’t know why, he just was), and being the oldest grandchild, he spoiled the hell out of me. After my grandmother died, I would spend the summers with him and we would do everything together. Many of my best qualities come from him. The one I tell people the most about me; that I am methodically impulsive, comes from him. I make sure that any time I want something; I research the heck out of it, and then when I am positive that it is a good or a good deal I “have to have it,” and nothing will stand in my way from getting it. I probably like this one the best as it has to deal primarily with spending money, which is one of my primary

The source is written by many different authors and it is mainly edited by the 4 authors mentioned above. These authors are one of the best scholars that tackle the controversial ideas of diversity, and Canadian policies. It respectfully challenges the saint idea that multiculturalism is great for Canada, however it does not claim Multiculturalism is actually bad. It continually demonstrates the underlying capability, the conventional restraints and the miniscule disorders of the policies and blinding discourse of multiculturalism.…

Throughout the state of Arizona there is an issue being debated around the state over multiculturalism in the classroom because of ethnic study classes that are in the schools. This heated argument began when a new Arizona law that was being made, that stated that they will ban ethnic studies from public an charter school. The reason behind the creation of this law is because certain individuals saw these classes as a "threat" to overthrow the government and "promote" ethnic solidarity over other students due the topics and books that were being used in the classrooms as materials. Which they used this law to get rid of Mexican-American studies alone over that reason without looking into the ethnic classes it self, for what it is. However, that not what others who are for these classes see it as, specially the teacher who are teaching theses classes to them.…

As people look at others around them and guess what cultural background they come from without knowing, in most cases, they are either slightly off or on the opposite end of the spectrum. Most everyone has been guilty by their assumptions of race or ethnicity at some point. I recently met John and was aware that he was Latino, but I did not know enough of his unique cultural background. He was born and raised a United States citizen.…

The contemporary, hostile political climate towards ‘Others’ in Australian politics is underpinned by a history of systematic and institutional racism. This hostility towards non-Anglo ethnicities, in particular Muslims, Arabs and Asians – whether immigrants, emigrants, asylum seekers, or refugees –remains xenophobic, and finds its expression in State Islamophobia and sensationalised fears of minority out-groups (ENDNOTE). An examination of Australian public policies from 1901 to present date indicate the lacklustre efforts of the Australian government and public to celebrate cultural diversity; rather, ‘modern racism’ directed at ‘Others’ is perpetuated by arguments of realist political discourse; the proliferation of harsher asylum-seeker…

Second, following the relationship between multiculturalism and social justice, Moran's piece shows that there is the need for multiculturalism to improve justice. Australia was a different society before the integration of multiculturalism. Racism and other forms of discrimination were still lurking in the society, but today, Australia is one of the regions that has improved regarding race, cultural, background and ethnic acceptable. Today, the Australian people are treated equally regardless of their race, language, ethnicity, religion, background and many other elements. Before the integration of the multicultural ideas, immigrants and other individuals that were considered as a minority group would miss various opportunities because of…

Dear, my classmate! I was writing this letter in the cold, wild Sunday afternoon in Melbourne. I just checked our class emails which are sent to me and you every week although I have left the class for a long time. At the first time, I just think our teacher is so kind when he continues to send me these emails, and I had not much emotion about these emails. However, this afternoon, in a foreign country, in a multicultural class, in a well educated system, and in the stress of lessons, when I read the words from our class emails, my memories about our class are full in my mind.…
