Graduation Speech: Important Life Lessons Learned From High School

Improved Essays
I don’t make speeches nor do I find talking in front of an audience appealing, I’m basically shy. I have wracked my heart and brain for what I ought to say to you today. I continually asked myself what I wished I had known before graduation, and what important life lessons to learn along the way. It has been 1389 days, 2,000,160 minutes, and 33,336 hours since we first stepped onto Newport Harbor’s campus, as freshman. Yes freshman! It feels like yesterday that we “little freshman” were wandering the labyrinths of Dodge and Beek halls like the changing staircases in Hogwarts.

If I have learned anything from high school it is that it flies by fast, and I mean really fast. One moment you are rolling out of bed, with bags under your eyes, the next you are battling the inevitable disease of seniorities. I wish I had believed past graduates, parents, and friends when they said to enjoy your high school expierence when you can because, you only have one. Because you only have one moment to enjoy life carefree and without the strings of the real world. We have had 4 whole years to live in a bubble refusing to face the reality while indulging in the worlds of the Upper East Side or learning that a song can fix anything from Kurt and Rachel.

There are no more shortcuts or extra credit, it is plain and simple, straight to the fact. High school is only 4 short years of our lives, so don’t be afraid to keep your eyes open and take it all in, because who knows, you could miss the whole

“Black Hair” by Gary Soto has a specific line that reminds me of what an average day in high school for me was like, “The days were dull. I did what there was to do from morning until the bell sounded”. I usually felt this way because, like Soto in his autobiographical story he felt alienated from everyone around him. I am about to tell you my story of a time in my life where I felt shunned by everyone.…

Wise Money Choices + College Costs = Minimal Stress I cannot believe I have made it this far this quickly. It feels like just yesterday when I was accepting my diploma from Mr. Salvatore, my middle school principal and crying while hugging friends who I knew would be attending a different high school than I. Then, on that hot September day, walking through what I thought must have been the biggest school in the state of New Jersey, I got lost, made new friends, and college was but a dwarfed blip on my radar, far, far away from the center of my mind. Subsequently, in tenth grade, Union High School became smaller and my excitement for graduation was planted by the upperclassmen’s conversations about the upcoming prom and graduation.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

For two places that have a similar purpose, which is to educate, the experience one will have at both places is far more different than one would expect.…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
