Going to back to college after being out of high school for a few years can be difficult, hopefully my journey will be rewarding. Graduating high school back in 2013 I have to adapt to my school surrounding as well as face some outside barriers. Being a single mother, i am always worrying out finances. One reason it can be an obstacle because if students are not able to afford to buy the required materials then they can get behind in their classes. For example buying art supplies for an oil paint class or watercolor class. In those two classes you need several materials and the materials can be quite expensive and something we don’t have enough money to buy them all at once. Therefore, we don’t get everything but will need them by next class. Due to the fact that we are unable to afford everything at once it causes us to get behind in our classes until we are able to buy everything.…

I started attending Lone star college right after high school, at first, I began with the typical high school graduate state of mind, which was that college was going to be a breeze and that it would all be fun and games; more worried about what was going on in my social life rather than studying the books. Especially since I had no real responsibilities to handle or much life experience. Around my first year of college, I started dating this girl and not long after we conceived our first son. Once this happened, my focus slowly shifted from school to working a full-time job at a welding shop in order to provide for my family. I still tried to attend class but was unable to find the balance between work, school and family and this reflected my grades.…

Although growing up in a household surrounded by Vietnamese tongue, my parents always made the conscious effort to ensure that I was becoming more fluent in English—as I read the Little Golden Books Series every night before I slept, watched the Berenstain Bears on the small, bulky cathode ray television before me, and completed numerous School Zone workbooks—so that I wouldn’t be a step behind my English-speaking peers once I was sent off to pre-kindergarten. I never thought much of it, but the idea of one day—in the distant future—walking through confetti with a cap and gown on and a diploma in my hand had always been ingrained since I was four. I knew that I was going to graduate high school and go to college before I could even use the…

Entering college as a student with little to no guidance of what to expect, made my transition remotely difficult. My mother completed two years of college, and my brother failed his first semester and dropped out of college, which made me curious as to what challenges I would face in this new environment. My first year I received a C and C+ in History and Pre-calculus respectfully. I was naive in the truth that I should have used office hours to solidify my understanding in these classes. My sophomore year I made another decision that would impact my academic standing by joining a Fraternity regardless of my lack of understanding of Greek life.…

My self-esteem is a fleeting emotion, one that I have pursued nearly all my life. I have had trouble with self-esteem for as long as I can remember, even as a young child. It likely stems from a number of different experiences and circumstances, such as growing up in the Catholic church as a product of divorced parents. Our family was ostracized by other families and because we also went to the Catholic school associated with the church, that disapproving treatment was an almost daily occurrence. We were excluded from church and school functions and never got invited to classmates’ birthday parties or sleepovers.…
