Graduate Teaching Assistant Reflective Report

I am a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) who assists the professor in lab sessions for a computer based software course. Each lab session lasts for about an hour and a half. My role is to facilitate learning by solving doubts that arise while solving in class exercises. Study stays assisting a course must be done in 3 simple steps, planning, implementing and evaluating the task. The professor for my course prepares the material for each session and gets a print out for the class and the teaching assistants. These files are uploaded on Blackboard a day before the class for students to download and 2-3 days before class for TA’s to prepare. This is the time to plan and do your homework, for implementing it in class with ease and finally evaluating of how things went and what could be done to do better, or to ponder over what you learnt in that session. I try to include active learning by giving hints first and letting student figure out the next step. I feel, this strategy not only helps them develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, but also prepares them for exams and post-course use. I encourage them to try to solve the problem, or if they cannot, to understand what could be going wrong by asking questions to themselves. However I wait until a point where they are engaged in thinking process but have not lost interest …show more content…
Also, since it demands personal attention, student’s often feel comfortable asking doubts as oppose to raising hand and asking a professor during a class. This means there is an opportunity to connect with your students and develop that mutual respect and trust and be sure to limit the conversations to professional level. However, sceptics have questioned how the concept is sometimes interpreted, arguing that there is unclear logical and pragmatic examination of its value in professional development. Therefore, developing a reflective report is an undertaking that needs to be approached with caution, more so if individual reflection and critical thinking are to be rooted. The purpose of this reflective report is to reflect on the collaborative boat bus project performance and the experiences of working within a multidisciplinary group. The report will give consideration to the feedback we obtained from the client and from Adam Smith (tutor) and how we then applied this feedback to feed in the report writing. An iterative model, meaning learning through participating, somewhat adapted to the one in Bulman and Schultz (2013)’s ‘Reflective Practice in Nursing p232’, Gibbs (1988)’s reflective cycle explains the significance of the evaluation process, especially building on negative as well as positive feedback.…

The video “Organize Your Thinking to Critically Analyze Text” (Brouhard, 2012) showcases an instructional strategy called “Keep it or Junk it” in which students read a short passage and select key vocabulary words from their reading to identify the main idea. After this is done, the students are eventually asked to write research essays on the content matter. There are multiple stages to the strategy, and the teacher does implement alternative techniques when she sees students who appear not to comprehend the task and cannot properly fulfill the objective. The students in the video are also shown using various terms from academic language in their classroom responses. The terms are all related to the subject or content matter, such as the “focus question” that they are required to answer or the “colonists” and “Powhatan” who were the focus of the readings.…

Being a leader, is more than being in a position of authority; it leader means guiding others in a direction that benefits them, and ultimately benefits others around them. I am a strong believer in the idea of leadership for service. This is the idea that I would be serving as a leader at UNC, not for my benefit, but for the benefit of others. By obtaining the leadership role as an orientation leader, I will be able to make a positive impact on incoming students, as well as students who have already experienced UNC. A Resident Assistant impacts a student throughout their entire semester during their time on campus.…

Competency 2 also states that social workers should present themselves as learners. I presented myself as the facilitator for the day, students called me teacher and I told them I was not a teacher or expert in citizenship classes but still they called me teacher. Another point Competency 2 refers to is self-regulation to manage the influence of personal biases and values when working. To be honest I don't think someone could master this point who could put aside their own values? I think in one way or the other you will always say and suggest something base on your own beliefs or values.…

Before I came to Kisling Non-Commissioned Officer Academy (NCOA), I thought of myself as a good leader with certain traits and aspects. I believe that if I take care of my airmen, that they’ll take care of me by completing work orders, squadron objectives, or any future events without question. It wasn’t until I attended NCOA, that I was able to put concept names to the leadership traits that I had. For example, I would put aside my self-interest for the good of the work center because I wanted my guys to know that I have their best interest at heart. Which turns out to be part of transformational leader idealized influence.…

Throughout this semester we have discussed and practiced various techniques that can be used when working with clients. This semester at Loyola has enhanced my understanding of what it truly means to be a social worker, from the classroom perspective. In my field placement, I do not believe it is directly related to social work, but I was able to use a social worker perspective when interacting with the children in the program. This course was the only course that provided me with hands-on experience of engaging with different types of clients. In my other classes, we did not do case demonstrations instead, we discussed different theories and perspectives about individuals and family systems.…

When I reflect on my academic career, I realized how the pedagogical approach to problems I learned over the years as a student and Tutor has helped develop my philosophical approach to education as a collective effort where intellectual diversity and critical thinking is respected. I think in retrospect at the time I had the opportunity to teach my first class. As a new graduate in Nigeria, I was mobilized for the National Youth Service Program, a compulsory one year national service, where new graduates are posted to different regions other than theirs with the aim of “producing future leadership with positive national ethos-Leadership.” Soon after my orientation at the school where I was posted, I was assigned to teach Geography. I was eager and curious to meet my students.…
