The goal of the PSFP is to assist students in providing health and human services to underserved populations with a high focus on civic engagement. I addressed the need for creative learning experiences through theatre arts for patients and families at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Through my program, I provided for the emotional, social and familial needs of these individuals. Over the course of a year, I was privileged to serve over 500 patients, siblings and families over 210 hours with an additional 296 administrative hours devoted to the creation and implementation of this project. 85% of patients and 96% of guardians felt that this program helped improve mood and reduced patients’ need to activate their self-administered pain pumps. Committing to this fellowship as a full-time student was possible because Point Park University fosters a community of mutual respect, diversity, and innovation. My professors and my University gave me the support I needed to pursue academic excellence while cultivating community

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

Upon my arrival at Commonwealth Honors Academy a mere twelve days ago I was ignorant to the fact that I was going to learn so much in my time spent here, but now I look back and realize that I have gained so much knowledge and I have acquired more details to add to what I knew before arrival. Overall I have learned that most things in life require constant attention and effort to make them truly work and that anyone you come in contact with and create an influence with will then, in turn, make a larger circle of influence that can quickly become bigger than you can ever be. The universal themes that have had the largest impact on me are the themes of Happiness, Friendship, and Sovereignty of Education. It was Aristotle who defined happiness…

“If theatre were available during the school day for all students, it would allow most students to experience the joy of theatre, even those who wouldn’t necessarily try it outside of school.” For Mueller, theatre has proven an integral part of her education, identity, and now even her career. A 2008 State High alumna, she reflects on her SCASD experience: “My best memories are from high school when I had the opportunity to sing in many choirs and perform with the State High Thespians,” said Mueller.…

I am writing to apply for the Administrative Fellowship at Children’s Mercy Hospital and Clinics. After reviewing the structure, goals, and benefits of this fellowship program and having the opportunity to talk to you about your experiences, I believe this is an excellent opportunity for me to continue to develop my career as a future health care leader. I am certain that Children’s Mercy Hospital and Clinics will align not only with my qualifications, but also will share my desire for a fellowship at an organization with a strong commitment to its community and the patients it serves. I began my fellowship search by looking for an organization whose values match my own. I sought after the right opportunity that would allow me the freedom to guide part of my experience through my personal interests, and…

Standing outside the Pittsburgh Penguins locker room after Game 5 of the Stanley Finals against the Nashville Predators I had never been more excited of the career path I chose. The adrenaline and anticipation as we wait for the locker room to open up for interviews only makes me more excited as I know I will be the only woman with a camera pushing and shoving for that perfect shot. Getting to see my favorite team get to the Stanley Cup Finals and being able to film every step along the way is a moment I will always remember and being able to be a part of history as the Penguins clench the series and win back to back cups. The parade that followed was unreal as all of Pittsburgh turned out for the team and there I was filming every moment. These two moments are only a few that have made me want to work in the sports industry as a cinematographer, editor, or producer.…

Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) has guided me, a 49 year-old college sophomore, to utilize my academic grit in order to mentor other students, and past experiences to succeed in my educational and career goal as a visual healing artist. My 25 years of medical experience are rooted in my professional goal to be a visual healing artist. Mentors of my previous medical profession ranged from surgeons, doctors, and firemen to patients and their families, all of which helped me learn about human anatomy, kinesiology, and compassion for humanity. My medical career started over 25 years ago as an administrative assistant. I worked my way up the medical professional chain from my emergency medical technician (EMT) certification, registered dental assistant, x-ray technician, surgical technician, medical administrator of insurance billing and surgery scheduling, to an insurance agent of life and health, disability and long term care.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

Today, June 18th, 2017, marks the last day of my first week of college at Paul Quinn College and I am proud to say, “I survived”. Committing to Paul Quinn was a really big decision for me because this school is a 17 hour drive away from my home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. I was afraid that I might get homesick or that I would not have the support of my family because I would be so far away from home. Soon, after visiting the Dallas campus, I realized that Paul Quinn was the school for me. This is the school where I will grow as an individual and I have come to that realization in my first week of college through the many conversations with upperclassmen, faculty, alumni and summer bridge students.…

As a possible incoming student, who not only desires to, but needs to learn and attend a favorable campus, the things that I can offer and/or bring are my experiences and skills. I will try to help enrich the campus community as much as I can. Although, my experiences and interests may be easily overlooked by some because of the simple fact that I am “only seventeen,” and that everyone is still continuously evolving. I believe I can still bring something to only help enrich the community. A particular experience that I know differentiates from others is, being Hmong.…

Surrounded in glory Angelou says, “it didn’t worry me that I was only twelve years old and merely graduating”. (Angelou, 2014,p179-180) In Graduation Day, Angelou and her peers fall under an illusion of success given to them by the academic agenda stressed in the poor school of Stamps. The community of Stamps would host a ceremony recognizing the graduates of both middle and high school. The overwhelming celebration of graduating overemphasized the importance of maintaining a realistic mindset of who and where the students were. Overly naïve aspirations were conditioned into the students through rewards presented to them, growing up, by the adults of the Stamps community.…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
