I love the excitement of helping students apply to college, learn from teachers, become a part of the campus community and earn their degrees. As I work with college students, I strive to listen, learn and grow. I have chosen to work in a field where every day is different, yet significant at the same time. I love that I am influencing students’ lives and appreciate the opportunities to help them become who they strive to be. Personal Philosophy of the Student Affairs Field Reflecting on my personal college experience and those of my peers, I believe that the field of Student Affairs provides a unique and even essential opportunity to help shape the experience that student’s receive within the university setting. I strongly believe that students gain more from their college experience learning and growing outside of the classroom rather than inside. Self-discovery and personal exploration through extra-curricular activities and interpersonal interactions guide students through their academic careers and develop who they wish to become as an adult facing the “real world.” Student Affairs professionals help to ensure that each student begins their track to self-discovery…

Models of student affairs help educators to “reflect on the characteristics of student affairs practice and the extent of the emphasis on student engagement and success” (Manning, Kinzie, and Schuh, 2017, p. 271). In order to enrich students’ educational experience and holistic development, I believe different student affairs models can be implemented at different levels while holding true to a university’s institutional mission. For over a year, I have worked with MBA students at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in the Evening and Weekend Programs Office. Booth’s mission centers around empowering students to “dig deeper, discover more, and shape the future” through personal, inquisitive thinking and open inquiry (Chicago…

Part One: Summary Skill Development Among Student Affairs Professionals by Darby M. Roberts is a short article based on research conducted amongst student affairs professionals in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Region III. Roberts’ research was conducted to show the variety of skills possessed by student affairs professionals on different levels such as new professionals, mid-managers, and senior officers. New professionals are individuals who have worked in student affairs for five years or less (Roberts, 2005). Mid-managers usually report directly to a senior student affairs officer. Individuals with 10 or more years of experience are considered senior student affairs officers (Roberts, 2005).…

Student development theories are important to learn and to incorporate into any student affairs professional’s practice. In order to do so, one needs to learn about the wide breadth of possible theories, some which are applicable to many fields and others are more specialized. For example the highlights I learned from class are things I found applicable to my current job and future career goals as an academic advisor. Some of these highlights were theories that focused on understanding how general student populations think or what issues they may be experiencing in various stages of development.…

I chose to rework the syllabus of HED 750 (Student Services in Higher education) because numerous researchers have found the importance of student affairs professionals on campus diversity dialogue. Watt (2007) stated that student affairs professionals are the persons who may facilitate the discussion on diversity, so they should be aware of his/her own biases, values, and prejudices; understand the viewpoint of others; and develop skills “to develop appropriate intervention strategies and techniques” (p. 115). Furthermore, McClellan and Stringer (2009) supported this idea because student affairs professions guide students morally, educationally, and in terms of health especially mental health. In addition, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA, 2016) emphasized diversity on student affairs administrators and started to create opportunities and supports to help grow the understanding among student affairs professions. There are several changes that was made in the syllabus: 1.…
