The Importance Of Academic Writing

From middle school, and throughout most high schools within the United States, writing is setup as a fill in the blank style process. Additionally, while in high school, formated writing was primarily ingrained within the english program. Rather than thinking critically and analytically when composing some form of writing I was taught to plug information in a pre planned layout and focus heavily upon editing grammar and syntax errors; which, are great skills, but these abilities are not the primary focus of college writing. While I was a upcoming freshmen in college, I was quite confident in my reading and writing abilities; however, I quickly realized the differential gap between high school and collegiate level english. Personally, one of my flaws is revising and drafting effectively. For instance, drafts I wrote in high school focused heavily on revising only grammar and syntax errors. However, in the book, From Inquiry to Academic Writing: A Text and Reader Third Ed. by Stuart Green & April Lidinsky, Green & Lidinsky discuss, that academic drafting and revising involves an in depth review of one 's material to help clarify, develop or improve on the ideas or issues being discussed (Green & Lidinsky, 13-14). Furthermore, the authors also state, “this quite different from simply editing one 's writing for grammatical errors and typos.” (Green and Lidinsky, 14). This highlights the flaw in my writing of only focusing on grammatical revisions; rather than, drafting and revising my main ideas to improve and progress the issues being reviewed. Obviously, academic revising and drafting is an essential skill for college writing, and a habit of mind I need to …show more content…
Still with aid of the book, From Inquiry to Academic Writing: A Text and Reader Third Ed., I now understand what academic habits of the mind I already possess and others I need to improve. For example, during my senior year of high school I wrote various essays which forced me to develop profound inquiries from multiple perspectives about controversial topics. This is one of the habits of mind I am quite familiar and comfortable with. Still, one personal shortcoming of mine is, I do not draft and revise accordingly to the habits of mind. I focus my revisions strictly towards grammar and syntax, when in reality I should be adjusting and revamping my main ideas and points discussed within the essay. Hopefully, by the end of my first year in college english I will have a profound grasp of the concepts of academic

In her 1980 article, Sommers realized through her case study, that “students understand the revision process as a rewording activity” (p. 381). Which means that when first-year college students revise, they simply change words around and try to get the ideas accurate on the text because they have not developed the ability to review their work, and redo it if necessary (p. 382). Instead, she argues that students should see revision “as an activity in which they modify and develop perspectives and ideas” (p. 382). She argues this because students should develop their arguments on their writing pieces during revision to prove their thesis statement better, rather than simply reword their paragraphs to make their writing pieces sound better. Sommers believes in her 1980 article that first-year college students should develop the ability to see revision as a process to approach revision…

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

    Joseph Harris's Revising

In order to prepare for writing a summary of Joseph Harris’s “Revising”, I first felt it was necessary to skim through the article once again to refresh my memory of the article. After re-reading the article, I tried to identify the main idea that Harris was trying to communicate. I believed that the main point could be identified through Harris’s emphasis on the fact that revising is not just correcting grammatical errors, but rather seeking out these errors was a part of a larger whole. I also referenced our in class discussion to identify the other main points of the article. From there, I worked on a general idea of what I would talk about in my summary and made note of what order I would do that in.…

I wrote one “source-based argumentative essay” in high school: my final essay from sophomore English. The guidelines were to write a four to eight page paper on any topic of your choice, but the thesis of the paper had to come across clearly. At the time, my personal goals were to write about something no one else would, as well as get an A in the class. As a future collegiate writer, I feel as though I have the habits and potential strengths to be successful, but my biggest weakness is that I do not know how to write a professional essay and I am a reluctant editor.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

College Writing And Reading For The Incoming Freshman The transition between High School and University writing can be challenging to the ill-prepared student. In high school we might have gotten great feedback from teachers about our work: “great job”, “very good” etc, but in college our professors might comment differently most likely because they are searching for something different in college writing. Most often because professors expect a different style of writing than that of a high school class, such as a more developed opinion on the subject rather than a summary of what you researched. The most significant differences are visible in structure, research, argument, and format. In college writing, we move away from the standard…

As a senior at TCPS, I am currently taking my second dual-enrollment college course, comp one. Before this college level writing course, I thought I had the skill of writing papers mastered. Throughout grade school, writing a paper in a few hours was easily achievable and was the general thing to do. My peers and I easily wrote papers without effort and made good grades. Therefore, when I started my first college writing course, I thought this was the thing to do.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

Writing does not come easily to everyone. No one starts out writing perfect essays, and everyone has areas where they need improvement. It takes many different skills, time, and a lot of revision. High school writing is much different from college writing, and with the help from the article “What Is Academic Writing?” by L. Lennie Irvin and chapter one in “From Inquiry to Academic Writing” it is easier to understand what academic writing is about and how it works.…

As I have been typing this essay though I have come to realize that I don’t like writing in the slightest other than for practice, it is too time consuming and it bores me. The part of writing that I seem to struggle with is writing itself. This is due to the fact that I don’t have much to say and once I have finished what I actually have to say I have trouble with coming up with more. The only part of writing that I would say that I excel at is the revision process. I have one writing goal, that being to have better grammar, other goals are financial.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…

If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…
