When the bully reached his target, he snarled, “You are a stupid butthead.” An unanimous gasp is heard from the audience as the victim’s face turns red as he bites his lip to keep from crying. In the first grade, this was quite a common scene. The second a “bad word” was spoken, eyes would widen, gasps could be audibly heard, and apologies were immediately uttered. Now, years later, words like "stupid" have obviously been replaced with more serious curse

Whether it is technologically or intellectually, our generation has been one step ahead. With the influence of new media, TV, and movies, society has become accustomed to using curse words on a day to day basis. Once upon a time, people would be more than surprised to hear a swear word escape the mouth of a friend, but in today’s society swear words are used more commonly than not. However, instead of cursing being used to offend someone, swear words have now been assigned to everything, and are even used as space fillers in sentences. TIME Magazine states, “About 0.7% of the words a person uses in the course of a day are swear words, which may not sound significant except that as they note, we use first-person plural pronouns — words like we, our and ourselves — at about the same rate.” As society moves progressively through the years, and with curse words becoming a regular part of our everyday language, curse words have lost almost complete shock value, and as a result, has stopped being viewed as offensive. You get frustrated, you might give up and sigh, “Fuck it!” You’re friends are joking and making fun of you, you can retort in a jesting manner, “Fuck you.” The same word was used in all of these phrases in three different ways, but is never used at someone’s expense. The current generation’s ability to use these words without aiming it at a person demonstrates that curse words are more often than not, simply expressions of an individual’s current emotion, invalidating their

The N-Bomb Raquel Cepeda’s “The N-Word Is Flourishing Among Generation Hip-Hop Latinos: Why Should We Care Now?” analyzes the contributions of the N-word and observes its effect in the Latino Hip-Hop culture as well as those who listen to it and the controversy it's attained and continues to cause from the perspective of various sources. This taboo term serves a different notion than that of what it used to 400 years ago. The N-word is now used as a term of solidarity, recognition, and even endearment (if used in the proper context) as Cepeda cites “...because every expression has the potential for ulterior meaning, depending on the circumstances of the person” (141). The N-Word symbolizes the hardships and struggles faced through the Transatlantic…

One must understand the presence of swearing in our society. The ten most popular swear words in the English language make up approximately 0.7% of the words said in public. Just to put that number into perspective, first person plural pronouns such as we, our and us make up about 1% of spoken language. This means that socially unacceptable language are used almost as often in public as socially descriptive words. All the symbols and squiggles used to…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…
