Before Graduate School
What I can remember about why apply for graduate school was being motivated by a peer that I became friends with during my undergrad at CSU Channel Islands. I had decided I wanted a break from school because it was hard with three kids and a husband. Although, I had an idea of what I wanted to do in life, which is to be a therapist, I felt I needed a break. Seeing Liz, a currently in our cohort, be motivated and apply for grad school, it encouraged me to do the same. My thought process was to apply and complete the program with a friend and go through it together for support. I figured it would be of benefit to have someone to work with and help each other through the process. We …show more content…
What I learned about this was that everyone acts a certain way due to what they have experience and how they have perceived it An example would be a child that struggles with forming attachments and unable to trust. It is mostly due to not developing a relationship with their mother or their caregiver as infants. Due to this factor they cannot build relationships because they fear abandonment. We see this especially with children that have been in the child welfare system for most of their lives or have been neglected (Kirst-Ashman & Zastrow, 2015). Social Policy. I learned that social policy was established to prevent and address social problems related to victimization, client’s rights to basic needs, social services, individual access to resources, promoting for equality, and advocating for prevention services. Every person is entitled to such services and as social workers it is our responsibility to advocate for those that have been victimized or have been denied of their basic human rights. As social workers we are to also prevent victimization or provide services for early interventions such as to reduce or manage mental health problems (Jansson, …show more content…
What I learned about social work at a macro level is that we can apply the generalist model the same as at a micro level. Before the program I didn’t understand how engagement, assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, termination, and follow up was applied. I know am aware how those phases are just as the same and important at a macro level. What I also learned was about organizational culture. I was not aware of such thing and once I was exposed to it I was able to understand and identify culture in my work place, which help me engage with my peers and have meaningful interactions. It also thought me to pay closer attention to the organizations missions and values because they may not always be the same as my own values or coincide with the social work values (Proehl, 2011; Jang, Ott & Shafritz,
