His voice echoed through the darkness as the flaming log cabin collapsed onto him. He felt crushed as the flames engulfed him. He cried in horror as the embers scorched him. There was a sudden tug on his arm as if it was grappled. The feeling of death made his heart drop and his eyes roll back. He felt his stomach dropped and he knew it was the end.

“Good morning!” exclaimed Grace’s mother. She awoke to a warm kitchen filled with the scent of pancakes and waffles. Her arms felt as if they had an intense sun-burn as she laid them on the counter to discuss matters with her mother. She still had nightmares about her tragic event last year. “What time is the celebration today?” questioned Grace.
“About 4:30.”

“If you still feel that you are responsible for it, there was nothing you could’ve unless you wanted to go up in flames. You should just be glad you saved your own life.”
“I know, but what if I could’ve saved him, think about how life would’ve gone.”
“You would’ve wanted him to die a painful death of his cancer? Let’s be honest here, it was pretty much instantaneous, he died doing something he loved and it was honorable saving you while he was at it, what more could someone want from it?”

Grace tumbled up to her room to think. This was something she has done regularly since the accident. It helped her calm down. She knew that everyone’s time eventually comes, and that the same would happen to her. They left for the celebration expecting a happy get-together, but got the exact opposite. Everyone was dressed in black and Grace and her mother were confused, but they went along with their vibe despite their confusion. They dressed semi-formal for this party, so they didn’t look very out of the ordinary.

“So how have you guys been holding up? This year really must’ve been hard, so my condolences are out to you.” said Grace’s
