Curley, after seeing Lennie smiling in his direction, felt as if he was being mocked, so he decided to start a fight he couldn’t finish. Lennie was actually smiling towards something else. Curley thought he was mocking his action of blaming someone for something they didn’t do. Curley thought he could take Lennie down, but even with his disability, his strength was enough. Lennie was able to stop a blow from Curley, which resulted in a broken hand: “The next minute Curley was flopping like a fish on a line, and his closed fist was lost in Lennie’s big hand” (pg 63). The force men used often resulted showing their power and dominance. This allowed men to move around on the power hierarchy due to their…

Steinbeck's novel of mice and men written in 1973 has a very in depth plot that pulls on your heartstrings. It is the story of George and Lennie a couple of vagrant workers in California during the depression, struggling to make their dreams come true while dealing with loneliness and the burden of Lennie’s disability. It ends in tragedy and sorrow, but the way the book was constructed and the rhetorical strategies used by the author easily convince the reader that George’s actions in the end were justified.…

Viewers would proclaim the film better because of its more realistic characterization. For instance, Slim "a tall man...moved with a majesty only achieved by royalty and master craftsmen....There was a gravity in his manner and a quiet so profound that all talk stopped when he spoke. His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject..."(Steinbeck, 33). Steinbeck portrayed Slim as God. Steinbeck spent an entire page describing Slim 's physique and indicated that Slim is unique. Slim was someone whom receives respect from others and is the "prince of the ranch". He gets attention when he walks into the room, and all talk stops. His word is as good as the law, and is always followed as evident from Steinbeck 's description. However, the Sinise portrayed Slim as a regular rancher, not God. As Lennie and George were cleaning up to get ready to eat lunch, Slim was introduced. Once Slim was introduced the scene, the ranchers all continued to eat as if nothing has happened (Sinise). The film portrayed Slim as a regular rancher. He did not get the attention of the other ranchers, but instead simply sat down, and life continued on. Throughout the film, not once was Slim portrayed any more than a typical rancher. The film characterization of Slim was more realistic then the novel. He was not portrayed as a God, but more humane. His…

Curley, a short, stocky man who has a tendency to quarrel with the bigger guys, picks a fight with Lennie. Lennie, being the innocent, child-like character, is in his own little world when Curley assumes he is laughing at him. Curley starts to yell and hit Lennie. George tells Lennie to get him, and Lennie inevitably crushes Curley’s hand. In the 1900’s people would lock guys like Lennie away in cages, because they have no idea how to deal with them. This is how Curley deals with this, he assumes that because Lennie is “disabled” he will be able to overpower and dominate him. This is one of the many unethical dilemmas that Steinbeck enlightens the readers with. George allows Candy to pitch in with their dream they hope to achieve. Candy lost his hand in a accident on the ranch and earns a butt load of money; he then convinces George that they can actually have a chance at their dream. In Cinderella, the Fairy Godmother comes on the night of the ball and presents Cinderella with her dream come true. This relates to George and Candy, Candy being Georges’ fairy godmother. These are just two of the dilemmas during Steinbeck's storyline, now lets look at the logical and illogical instances that…

In 1937 John Steinbeck wrote the novella Of Mice and Men, in order to express his societal conscience about America in the 1930’s. Of Mice and Men is about visions, friendship and hope. It’s a story about the nature of human visions and ambitions and the forces that work against them as it is the story of two men. The principal theme of this bestselling novel is that humans give importance to their lives and to their futures by creating dreams. Without dreams and goals, life is a limitless stream of days that have diminutive joining or meaning. It tells the story of George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers, who move from place to place in search of new employment opportunities during the Great Depression in California,…
