Journal Entry #1 After reading chapter one of Bain’s book, I discovered that in order to be successful throughout my college career I must first take responsibility for my education, and second, find myself a mentor. In my opinion, the term “mentor,” can vary depending on who you talk to, so for the purpose of this assignment, I will give you my definition of a mentor. As I sat and thought about a good question to ask, a lot of people began stating questions that they would ask. The one that stood out to me the most was, “What life experiences do you have that allow you to be a great mentor.” The reason this question had such an impact on me was because growing up I was always taught that everyone is unique in their own way and that we can all learn from one another. When I am experiencing a difficult situation, I want to be able to go to my mentor for advice on how to overcome that situation. I want my mentor to be open to sharing their mistakes and failures because that is often where our biggest lessons are learned. It will also help me become aware that although challenges will arise, I can overcome them if I handle the situation appropriately. My ideal mentor would not only be willing to help me in that situation but would also follow up after some time to make sure I was able to solve the problem. I also want my mentor to know me on a personal level. They should know my current and future goals in life and should care about them as much as I do so that they can help me stay on the right track. All in all, I want my mentor to provide an exceptional learning experience for me and, in doing so, allow me to gain more awareness, insight, and perspective. All things that can be improved with a strong mentoring
