Goya’s artworks were created during and after an exceptionally dark period of Spanish history, the Napoleonic wars during the French Revolution. During the French Revolution, France was at war with various European countries that were lead by England, which formed an alliance. The Peninsular War (1807 - 1814) involved the conflict between French and Spanish forces, who until that point, had been allies. With Napoleon’s brother Joseph taking the Spanish throne during the third Napoleonic war, dethroning King Charles IV, Spain became dominated by the French military.
