FLOW’s “Hero – Song of Hope” plays. It’s a sight to behold as the purple and gold glows enveloping each character’s body shift in and out of the screen, culminating in Goku unleashing a ravenous blue wave of energy—the Kamehameha technique. This was the climactic scene of the 2013 film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. It just so happened to be both the first DBZ movie since the 1990s, as well as my first experience seeing my favorite TV show of all-time on the big screen. Mom and Dad dropped me and my brothers off at our grandparents to spend the night. We had breakfast for supper and watched Looney Tunes on Cartoon Network until time for sleep. I covered myself with a blanket on the couch where Papaw normally slept. I dozed off to sleep rather quickly, and awoke a couple of hours later. My head was facing the couch, and it was dark so I could do nothing but listen. I was drowsy, but something caught my attention. A rock song was playing lowly in the night. “Dragon, dragon! Rock the dragon!” Dragon?! My heart skipped a beat. I rolled over quickly. My eyes were blurry, so I gave them a quick rub, focusing them. It was the show I had been thinking of for days! It was the one my dad said not to watch! Dragon Ball Z! My father’s words echoed in my brain: No, son.
