The purpose of this paper will be to discuss the different assets, hazards and risks faced today by college universities, as well as, ways to mitigate, prepare and respond to these threats. I will cover both hazards and threat actors faced by college campuses today and render my opinion of why I believe these to be the greatest risk to a campus. Assets deemed critical, or at a high criticality level will receive the most protective measures. Criticality can be defined as (Fisher & Green, 202004, p.140),”The term has been defined to mean the impact of a loss as measured in dollars. As noted earlier in this chapter, the security manager must know what assets are being protected, including their relative value to the overall health of the organization.” The college’s main goal is to protect life and the safety of students, staff, faculty, vendors, contractors and visitors in a manner that promotes the educational process. Secondly, universities must protect property against damage or loss to include its perimeter, parking lots, equipment and buildings. Thirdly, they must protect against threats to their proprietary information to include that of vital records, information technology, and security and telecommunication systems. Finally, college universities must protect their reputations against harm and negative publicity. Universities with negative reputations can see a reduction in student enrollment, thus affecting their bottom line.
