Brave New World, a novel written by Aldous Huxley, is a satirization of an all-powerful government and a portrayal of how new technologies could be used to alter facts. A similar novel is 1984 by George Orwell where the reader is shown the physical and psychological effects of totalitarianism and brutal political authority. Both author’s books were written after Stalin’s Soviet Union (USSR) began, and Huxley and Orwell heard of the cruelty happening in the fifteen countries the USSR controlled. (It's thought that Aldous Huxley created “Soma” in his novel as a metaphor for MDMA or ecstasy considering they are said to have the same effects; in the late 1950s, the drug Carisoprodol was marketed under the name Soma.) The government mass produces Soma and gives it out to it’s citizens, and this drug is arguably the best method of political control they have. It’s psychedelic and euphoric effects not only promote social stability by eliminating the need for sources of happiness (religion, better living conditions, etc.), but it also clouds the people’s reality making it much simpler to change the truth about the past. Since the “old” way of reproduction is no longer used and all children are scientifically produced, the government is able to alter newer generations to genetically be any way they desire. The lower castes, Deltas, Gammas, and Epilsons, are created by gentle exposure to alcohol while still embryos which makes them physically functioning but not fully capable of controlling their own brains. This makes them easier to control as a group, and because they are the lower castes, there is more of them than there is of humans with free thought.
