Censorship is defined as the suppression or prohibition of speech, public communication, or information that may be considered objectionable, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, institutions or media.
When a creator or author censors their own works or speech, it is self-censorship. Censorship can be direct or in some cases indirect, it is then referred to as soft censorship. This occurs in many different media outlets as well, including: speech, writing, music, movies, and many other forms of art. In many countries, there are strong protections against censorship by law, however none of these protections are absolute because most cases they are subjected by leaders or judges. They have the final say what may and may not be censored. An example of censorship is in Beijing where Chinese troops removed a statue called “Goddess of Democracy” in Tiananmen Square on June 4th 1989, and continue to censor information about the events on this day.
Official reports say that 200 civilian and 20 government officials were killed however, unofficial reports say that thousands of civilian demonstrators and 50 officers were killed in the event.
An earlier example of censorship was when the Greek philosopher, Socrates went against the Greek states attempts to keep his philosophical teachings from the public.
