Government, Aristocracy, And Democracy In Ancient Rome

The ancient Roman government was a very complicated system. In some respects it is a little bit like the American government it had a Senate and the people chose who got to be in it. Their government was broken into three parts each of them represented the different types of government monarchy, aristocracy, and democracy. The consuls are the group that represents the monarchy. The consuls are in charge of all public affairs. They don’t leave the city very much and they present other kings or visitors to the Senate. All other powers must obey them. The consuls are the kings in the Roman government. The senate represents the aristocrats. They have control the treasury and the amount of items they are buying from other states. Although Rome couldn’t decide what she was she did do a good job on making them all work together. Each group needed the support of the other two if they were to get anything done. If the consul wanted to go to war he needed the support of the senate and the people because the senate controlled the gold for weapons and food and such and the people needed to fight in the army. If the consul didn’t win both groups he wouldn’t be able to go to war very easily. And if the senate wants to pass a law they must have the people and the consul agree if they can’t get both of groups to accept then they can’t pass the law. In a way each group holds power over everyone, but it also keeps any one group from getting more power than they already have. Each of these groups of government was important to the way these people lived. They found a way to make the three main plans of government work together in near perfect harmony.
