There are a number of ways that the government can influence economic growth and productivity. The goal of government policies successful planning will help determine what kind of world the next generation will inherit (Mankiw, 2015). Some of the policies that government has influence over are research and development, savings and investment, health and nutrition, and education. Each has its own agenda and part of the growth of the economy.
Research and development have played a major role in a higher standard of living. The government encourages research by issuing research grants that promote knowledge. A particular organization is the National Science Foundation (NSF), which funds approximately 24 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America’s colleges and universities (National Science Foundation, n.d.). I currently work for a research institution who relies heavily on federal funds from NSF to operate research vessels that take scientists and students out to sea to conduct studies of the ocean. Without this type of funding, the research would be limited and results would be minimal. In working with these scientists, I have learned a great deal about what goes on the oceans floors as well as the impact to the environment that the current climate conditions are having on the ocean and animals.
