The theme of this commercial is Goths, but it is a resistant interpretation of them. The setting of this commercial is in a nightclub, where almost everyone is Goth. The commercial opens with a long, establishing shot. This shot is of the outside of the nightclub. The next medium shot, shows the nightclub guard, and the people in the queue, more closely. The guard himself is a Goth. Clothed in black, he looks grimacing. The other people in the queue, are also dressed in classic Goth ensembles, and they all look grim as well. Afterwards, two non-goth men come up to the club, and happily join the line. Then, some Goths are shown, leaving the club, and as they open the door, grim music comes from inside. There are also sounds of screaming and sirens, that add to the grim atmosphere. The two non-goths, realizing that the club is full of Goth people, now seem to be afraid to go in, so they leave. This portrays how non-goth people are always quick to jump to conclusions that Goth people are dangerous, based on their

Gothic literature applies to all works of writing with dark and chilling elements much like Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. Creating Our Own Monsters Using aesthetically appealing vehicles, Dodge creates this advertisement to attract a younger and arguably more reckless crowd to the all new Dodge Hellcat. The commercial begins by playing the unmistakable opening beat to Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight”. The original Gothic conventions of naivety, infantilism and rebellion are inherent within Black Swan. Within the room of the main protagonist, Nina, lay infantilising elements, which symbolise her innocence and good, child-like nature. When Nina’s life causes her to fully lose grip with reality and commence her final descent into madness, a mid-shot reveals her throwing away stuffed toys down a laundry shoot. The distant clattering and diegetic sounds of the toys reaching the end of the tunnel provide symbolism and foreshadowing for the repercussions of Nina’s transformation into the Black Swan. Furthermore, this scene elucidates her final metamorphosis into discarding her innocence and indulging in the characteristics of the Black Swan.…
