Gothic elements in literature Society in this day and age has skyrocketed into more conflicts. Whether it 's violence in crime or the psychological issue -- maybe even both -- these elements are a clear reflection of the many novels (with components of gothic literature) that truly reveal how our society has progressed to today. The novel, Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn, illustrates the various parts and conflicts today somewhat. Other works do the same; for example, short stories like The Feather Pillow by Horacio Quiroga, The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe, and The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe utilize similar ideas. These illustrations all share commonalities of gothic literature and reflect, often, the conflicts of our society.
Gothic literature elements are clear and very apparent, especially in Sharp Objects, by Gillian Flynn. The book itself is a murder mystery that is being solved by a psychologically unstable aspiring journalist. Therefore, the book can also be categorized as a gothic genre. For example, “one morning in cool blood, I slipped a noose about its neck and hung it to the limb of a tree….” ( Poe 3). Clearly noting death, the owner of the cat hung his pet cat, Pluto, just because he knew it was wrong to do so. This also shows a psychological problem. Oddly, the owner states that he feels remorse when he cuts his cat’s eye out before killing him. However, he then contradicts himself by saying, “... I soundly and tranquilly slept; aye slept even with the burden of murder upon my soul.” (Poe 6). The fact that he says that he feels remorse for his deeds when he then explains how he feels in bliss after his wife’s murder, is a sign of a mental issue. Psychological issues are elements of gothic
