Gothic Setting
The night falls early due to the start of the cold season. He walks through the haunted, dark forest, feeling the branches hit against him and spiders crawl up his face as he ruins their cobwebs. The air smells like toxic gas and he can taste the unpleasant sand as he opens his mouth as wide as he can to yawn. He stands at a safe distance from an abandoned, ominous castle that looks like a huge, cursed mansion. This castle holds the secret of what he is looking for. The branches lean forward into the path scaring him to turn back. The floor is uneven and looks as if it has not been raining for days. The night is cold and foggy and the icy wind is like a knife piercing into your skin. Heavy clouds cover the clear, dark sky and there is no sign of the moon anywhere. Rain starts to pour down on the dirty, mucky floor splashing the damp soil on his boots. He can taste the freshness of rainwater dripping down into his mouth. He walks when he sees the creaking door with weird symbols carve on the wood opens and locks itself as the man steps in. It is as though an invisible ghost is responsible for moving the door. He walks up the unstable stairs and places his hands on the dusty handrail. Judging by the look of this castle, it seems old. The first floor has lots of walls cover in silk curtains, he tears off the curtains, and a secret passageway reveals. As he walks, fire torches on the walls of the narrow passageway light up, there are many rooms with cracked ceiling and holes on the floor. He starts to walk up the stairs and sees a painting and large tinted windows when he reaches the roof. The painting is of a boy with hair that is as black as sesame, leaning back against the wall in one of the castle's hidden room; he seems to be screaming at a pillow flying towards him. The man knows

The Triumph of the Value of Human Life Over the Value of Money: The Luxurious Impregnability of Concentric Castles vs. The Affordability of Old Castles One of the most frightening things is to be woken up by the dreadful noises of frantic screams of desperate people and the horrific smells of burning wood and flesh; to frantically run through the suffocating smoke and, just about when you reach the outside and think you are safe, to watch your castle, your home, your protective fortress disappear in front of your eyes, engulfed in flames. This was a common situation that those living in a wooden medieval castle had to face. This could be a gorey scene from a horror movie; however, for medieval kings and lords, this was their reality that…

The novel Dracula written by Bram Stoker’s has countless adaptations due to Stoker’s unique construction of the monstrous character Count Dracula. These adaptations include movies, television series, parodies, novels, video games, and comic books. At first impression of the film I thought the director and screen play writer did a satisfactory job alongside keeping the film similar to the original writings, although there are some differences. One of the most prominent character difference was that Lucy’s Mother was not in the film to help her when she is ill, or in the film at all. Dr. Van Helsing swears that the best thing is to provide a blood transfusion on Lucy, although in the novel this is a process that goes on four times but, in the…

With a ruin standing strong in the night, a lone traveler passes by, using the light behind the never-ending barrage of clouds as his only compass. The twisted trees find home in the grassy plain bordering the trodden path to the right as the darkness closes in and a peaceful desolation takes into place. A dark and foreboding oil painting on canvas, Arnold Böcklin’s Mondscheinlandschaft mit Ruine, or Ruins in Moonlit Landscape, capture and illuminate the idea of the picturesque beauty of darkness, and the endurance of nature over the brevity of human existence. Born in Basel, Switzerland in 1827, Böcklin was an influential painter both in his time and in subsequent art movements, creating pieces that have be praised by the king of Bavaria,…
