The sky was motionless, clear black sky all around with not a hint of clouds or stars touching the dark infinity. The large compound was blanketed by the darkness, it’s black and grey walls providing a camouflage in the nighttime. Hiding in the darkness, just outside the compound’s entry gates, was a short girl, in her early 20’s. A black outfit covered her from head to toe - not something she’d usually find herself wearing, but it was a much better camouflage in the black of night.

Gracie had had this day planned for a long time. Months of planning, months of scoping out the compound unseen, months of making sure her plan would be perfect. She couldn’t fail. If she failed, she would die. If she died, her mission would never be complete. Nobody else would take it on, nobody else believed they needed to go to

That meant it wasn’t going to be seen from inside the compound. The outside, however, was another story. She wasn’t sure if anyone did outside sweeps of the compound, but it would make sense, so she had to cover it up. She’d cashed in a favour from an old friend, to help her drag a tree branch, covered in leaves, to put over the hole. It wasn’t the best cover, if someone were to be suspicious of the fallen tree and moved it, her progress would’ve all been for nothing. But, luckily, it seemed nobody had spotted it. Or maybe they had, and just hadn’t bothered to check it out. Either way, the hole remained.

Getting in was probably the easiest part of the whole operation. Pull the tree branch aside, crawl through the hole, hide in the bushes. Then, it was hard. She knew people patrolled the area at night, but she didn’t know exactly how many, nor did she know their paths. There were just some things even insider info couldn’t tell her. What she did know was there had to be at least ten - it was a large compound, many potential enemies could try to get in, or prisoners could try to get

The theme to Denis Johnson’s “Emergency” gives a sense that shows the reader the reality of an addict’s mind with a slight Gothic feeling. At the beginning of the story, Fuckhead seems to be just a worker at a hospital and he’s just fine mentally. When this story goes further, it shows that his friend, Georgie is obviously hallucinating that there is blood on the floor, but is just a figment of his imagination, and the floor is clean but Fuckhead plays along with Georgie. A bit later in the story, Georgie is obsessed about the “peculiar sound” coming from his shoes, the shoes giving off the imaginary squeak sounds but Fuckhead hears nothing. This story gives off a recurring gory feel in the sense that there is mention of blood throughout “Emergency,” Georgie is mopping up imaginary blood, a patient comes in with a hunting knife in his eye, Georgie cuts up a pregnant rabbit.…

There wasn’t even *one* cigarette butt.…

After about half an hour of us walking around and talking, some acne filled, tall, muscular and older, German teenagers came up to us.…
