Movies use bad familial relationships to cause tension or to use as a form of comic relief. This convention is also very important in a lot of gothic stories. These relationships can be in the form of marriages, parent child relationships, or dysfunctional families. One example of this is the movie “Into the Woods”. This movie has several different toxic relationships in it. Cinderella’s family is a great example of this concept. Her family, specifically her stepmother and stepsisters, treat her horribly by not treating her like a person and by using her as a stepping stone for their goals. Jack is also a very good example of the convention. Everything that he does in this movie is to gain the approval of his mother; this shows how toxic that relationship is. Another movie that is a very good example is “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”. Todd’s family is very separated and do not really recognize each other. Sweeney Todd thinks that his wife and daughter are perfect ideals of women and do not recognize them because of that. This idealization causes his daughter to run away and him to kill his wife. He does not realize till later that it was his wife that poisoned herself (?). These two movies very clearly show the dissolution of the family structure and some very toxic relationships even if it isn’t
