Goteborg Research Paper

His name was Alf and he came from Solna, Sweden, 20 minutes away from Stockholm. He had a poor family that lived on a farm. He had two young children and a wife named Anna. Alf was a farmer and Anna was jobless and homeschooled her children. They were not very successful with farming, because the crops had been bad for at least a year. He was not making enough money to feed his children. During the time that Alf was experiencing problems the Swedish King ruled with an iron fist. The state church had great power. After Alf decided that going to America was what he needed to do to help his family, he set out to go to Goteborg for a ship. When they had arrived at the Goteborg harbor, they were told to board the “Wilson Line Orlando”. They took that ship to Hull, England. It took two days to get to England, which the worst part being that there were cattle on the ship, which made the ship smell very bad. The sleeping quarters were horrible, and the boat was rocking on the stormy seas. Once they arrived in Hull, England, they were told to board a train and take it to Liverpool, England. That’s where they would get the ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean to America. The ships crossing the Atlantic were not any better than the ship that took them to Hull, you had to bring your own bedding, unless you wanted to sleep on wooden planks. They were not looking forward to the journey. They boarded a ship that would take them from Liverpool to Castle Gardens. After the long voyage across the Atlantic, they arrived at Castle Gardens, which was an isolated place where immigrants could be processed.
