In editing and expanding Mark’s prophecy of Jerusalem’s fall and the eschaton, Matthew interpolates several parables of judgment. How do these parables function to stretch the time of the End into the far-distant future?
We do not know when the end will come, and the writer of Matthew seems to expand upon Mark’s prophecy of this fact by speaking in parables. Humans cannot fathom the end of their life at some point in the future, much less gain a concept of eternity. By speaking of the end time as something in the far-distant future, the focus is put back on establishing Christ’s Kingdom here on Earth as opposed to maintaining a singular focus on individualistic spiritual mindset.
