The Gospel of Mary is a non-canonical Gnostic gospel that is attributed to have been written by Mary Magdalene or Mary the mother of Jesus. Three copies of the gospel have been discovered, one was written in the Sahidic dialect of Coptic, and two others in Greek. Most scholars agree that the first manuscript was originally written in Greek sometime during the second century CE, which was found later on in Northern Egypt. What gives us a clue that this text was written during this time was that the gospel seems to have been written when Christianity was made up of communities usually spread out around the Eastern Mediterranean and after the resurrection, oral practices dominated the lives of early Christian to preach the word of the Lord. The Savior is answering their questions about the end of the physical world and the meaning of sin. The teaching is a very profound one, he teaches them that at present, all material and spiritual things are linked with each other, and that at the end, this will not be the case. At the end, everything will return back to its own origin, its own original state and follow its own fate. He says that the nature of sin comes from the people, and that sin is not a real thing, but something we create. He finishes his teaching with a warning against those who would fool the disciples into following a heroic leader or set of laws. Instead, he says that they are to seek the child of true humanity within themselves and get their inner peace. He commands his disciples to go out and preach the gospel, as he leaves. The disciples are afraid that they will have the same fate that Jesus did. They did not comprehend what the Savior was teaching them, instead of seeking inner peace, they were frightened. Mary comforts them because she did understand the word of the lord, she also tells them about a vision she had received from the Savior. He had explained to her the nature of prophecy and the rise of the soul to its final rest. However, four pages are missing from the manuscript so we do not know exactly what the whole vision of Mary was about.
