The Book of Matthew was originally believed to be written for the community at the time. Most likely a small amount of Jewish people in the church around that area. Recent research suggests however it was written for all Christians. Either case if it was in fact designed for a small community, it was written so to reach all Christians. Even if the copy was meant for a specific church or small community, there would have been multiple copies sent out to sister churches for edification. During this time the churches were struggling and the Jews were fighting against the Romans. In 70-AD the Siege of Jerusalem devastated the Jewish people and many of their temples were destroyed. The Jews revolted against Rome then in 66-AD. Understanding this relationship between the Jews and the Romans allows us to see their circumstance. Not only were the Jews in a war with the Romans, but there was also an opposition against christianity by other Jews, Gentiles, and Romans. The book of Matthew condemns the Scribes and Pharisees of the time who opposed Jesus and His teachings which gave this small community of Jews a warning for their persecution. Not only were the Jews separated from the synagogue, but they also feared persecution from the Romans and other Jews. They could not find their identity with either people group and there was no
