In her message, Goodall who is known for her decades of studying wild chimpanzees in Tanzania writes that she feels sorry for Maynard having to defend a shooting that he "may disapprove of." Goodall also says that it looked as though the gorilla was putting an arm around the child and calls it "a devastating loss." Goodall went on further to ask if the other gorillas had a chance to express grief, which she feels is necessary.
Jack Hanna, American Zoo keeper also gave his opinion regarding the incident to Inside Edition: "You don’t have seconds or minutes to make a decision like this. When the animal blows, it is like lightning. I will bet my life on this, that that child would have been – I don’t even want to tell you what would have happened,” said Hanna. "The boy had no chance whatsoever,” according to Hanna.” The boy should thank God every single day of his life. This gorilla was not happy."

Four days after entering the zoo, Benga decided he had enough of the mistreatment. When one of the park employees entered the cage Benga wrestled them, kicked them, and threatened to bite. This happened on multiple accounts before William Hornaday understood that Benga was protesting his living conditions (51). Benga acted out of a desperate need of freedom, and this is one of the first truly apparent signs that further events could go awry if he is unable to return to his tribe in the Congo. Benga’s risk paid off, for shortly after Hornaday ordered park employees to release Benga from his cage and let him explore the zoo for an hour each day provided that he had supervision (54).…
