Diana Meyers argues that personal autonomy is not an all-or nothing phenomenon. There are different forms of autonomy and autonomy admits different degrees. Meyers describes personal autonomy as one in which an individual’s “conduct is morally permissible and is not dictated by any technical rule, and when they are doing what they, as individuals want to do” (Meyers, pg. 619). Meyers articulates the different types of autonomy as programmatic autonomy which involves self-direction concerning big life questions. A person is programmatically autonomous when they carry out their life plan answering questions such as “what line of work do I want to get into?…

The amount of control we have in what happens in our lives is often heavily debated. Do we have full power over what happens, or are there some things that just have to occur? This question can be answered using the nonfiction books The Sports Gene by David Epstein, and Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell. Both stories revolve around expertise in a certain hobby, and whether or not our choices determine our expertise in that hobby. In Outliers, Gladwell supports that we do have control over what happens in our lives.…

From early in my childhood, every toy and electronic device in our house was a target for creative ‘re-construction’, holding each piece up with a probing ‘why’. As I grew older, ‘why’ became a need to fix, build and reconceptualize and so the path toward medicine was a natural progression. Years later, my facscination in podiatry emerged through formal and informal study; recognizing a medical universality about the specific region of the foot and ankle. In incorporating a range of specialties to include Dermatology, Orthopedics, and Pain Management, few areas of medicine seemed so encompassing. A personal turning point was the realization that mobility is what defined the very notion of functional independence.…
Part 1: Meta-cognition – Analysis of own learning Motivation and engagement Motivation is the internal state that energises, directs and maintains behaviours over time (Duchesne, & McMaugh, 2016). The Importance of Maxims Colin McGinn’s “Why Not Be A Bad Person”, suggest many life altering perspectives on possible thought processes when conducting oneself with another individual as well as oneself. He suggest many maxims that have moralistic values in which he believes will help motivate individuals when making rational decisions and having rational reactions in situations. For example, McGinn's maxim, “Don’t allow your temper to do what your reason can’t”, stimulates an individual's rationale. Once understood that a temper, though constitutes and is responsive to reasoning, it is in the reason of reaction that establishes if a person is “good” or “bad”. This maxim follows the basic virtue of Justice within oneself because of the moral balance needed to compose a logical judgement based on facts and what is equitable when giving a response in retaliation.…
