The gopher tortoise is a large dark-brown to grayish-black terrestrial turtle with elephantine hind feet, shovel-like forefeet. The adult shell ranges in size of 5.9 to 14.6 inches long. It has a gular projection beneath the head on its yellowish, hinge less plastron or undershell. In comparison to females, males are generally smaller; with a larger gland under the chin, a longer gular projection, and more concave plastron. The gopher tortoise is seen as an important species in the ecological environment where it is found because it digs burrows that provide shelter for at least 360 other animal species. The class of the gopher tortoise is Reptilian, the order is Testudines, the family is Testudinidae, the genus is Gopherus and the species is G. Polyphemus.
The gopher tortoise belongs to a group of land tortoises that originated in western North America nearly 60 million years ago. At least 23 species of tortoise are known to have existed on our continent since that time, but only five remain today. Because of disparities in the type of data collected, methodologies in collecting data, and differences in the scope of studies, it is not possible to simply combine datasets to evaluate the status of the gopher tortoise. The current estimates of gopher tortoise populations include: approximately 785,000 in Florida, 250,000 in Georgia, 30,000 to 130,000 in Alabama and 400-500 in South Carolina. Those are the only places they are found in the

As the Earth goes through time, we began to see that the species that were developing were slowly evolving into the modern day turtles that we see now. They began to lose their rough scaly shell with the N. argentina and the N.oweni and began to develop a more smooth texture, needed for swimming. This is where we discover the genus Meiolania (“small roamer”). The species within Meiolania have been known to be on earth until about 2000-3000 years ago living between the Oligocene-Holocene eras and it mainly resided within Australia, Lord Howe Island, New Caledonia and Vanuatu varying in different sizes while in different areas. Meiolania had a very unusually shaped skull that hosted many knob and horn like bulges.…

Hedgehogs are by far, one of the ugliest sorts of creatures we take home as pets. Much like a rat, yet covered with long hair that makes them look spiked, hedgehogs are a bit more friendly and absolutely fat, often getting stuck on their large backs, flailing their short, stubby legs in every direction. It is no question that these animals are not attractive to look at. On the other hand, when seeing them play, popping their head out of your favorite coffee mug, or cuddled up in the tiniest of blankets, or wearing the holiday hats you dress them in without protest, they seem not very ugly at all, actually quite adorable and cute. Not only in hedgehogs, but in every aspect of life, there is something both beautiful and ugly to be found.…

Gorgonopsids were the largest predators of the late Paleozoic, the era just before dinosaurs. They grew as large as 10 feet long and were among the most ferocious predators ever, Ward said. Their heads appeared somewhat dog-like, with large saber-tooth upper canine teeth up to 4 inches long. Though they had a somewhat mammalian appearance, their eyes were set at the sides of the head like those of a lizard, and the body was probably covered with scales rather than hair. The gorgons would have resembled a cross between a lion and a large monitor lizard – leading to the name science has given them.…

My brothers and I all have supernatural thrillers, scifi adventures, and comic books about aliens and mutants stacked up on the shelves of our bookcases. That’s why, when I was telling my family about how I needed a topic relating to my field of study for English class, my 15 year older brother gave me an idea. Tortoises are not able to swim with the way they are built so they would drown even though they are able to hold their breath for a long period of time. This is actually possible for both animals because in order for them to retract into their shells they need to be able to fully empty their lungs. Tortoises can, and really do, live anywhere in the world besides areas of the extreme cold of course. Generally, they stay in warmer and drier climates. Did you know that the lighter a tortoise's shell the warmer the climate that they live in…
