Books end up on the censored or banned list because are reported to have content that is believed to be harmful to the reader. For children’s books, many complaints are made by parents who think the content of the book could harm their child’s mind or may be an inappropriate topic to learn about. Some of the main complaints are made due to: religion, sexual orientation, political views, violence and “obscene” language. Goosebumps should not be banned because it contains no offensive language and the central character never dies, the protagonists can be both male and female, they can contain good moral lessons for children and promote family values, the books depict protagonists escaping doom with their own wit and ingenuity, and young readers love simple language and easily-followed yet engrossing plots.
